My girlfriend has mentioned that she would like to have a Mercedes convertible from the 80s to drive as a weekend car. Any suggestions for a reliable and somewhat affordable model for her? If anyone knows of another forum I can go to for suggestions, that would also be appreciated.

What Pass said........stay away from the earlier 380SL unless you have a service department work order showing the double roller timing chain conversion has been done. Even then, it is a dog.

Red on tan is the hot color combo.......next is black on tan......."American Gigolo" soundtrack is optional.

Love those cars. They are a great value at current prices, and one of the best, relaxed cruiser cars I've ever driven.

Edit: The OurSL website is a good resource, not sure if it's still free.

560SL would be the best. I had a '77 450SL that I bought from the original owners a couple of years ago with for $3k with 80k miles on it. The car was perfect. I loved driving it. The semi truck sized wheel is awesome. I cruised down from Seattle to San Francisco at 90 mph all day long it was great.

Neat site; thanks for the tip. Tough to beat this one in terms of mileage: 1989 560SL 3100 miles! Signal Red/Parchment $65K!

edit: so much for "tough to beat"; found on the same site: 1989 560SL Signal Red/Creme Beige - 125 miles! NEVER PRIVATELY TITLED

The 380 has an unreliable low HP engine (155 hp or so). Like the others have said, a low-mileage 560 SL is the way to go for the 80s.

Otherwise a 1979 450 SL is also a good choice. The 1980 has a different (expensive) fuel system.

A lot of them are advertised at http://www.mercedesheritage.com/classifieds/
You might also want to check out "The essential buyer's guide: MB 280-560 SL&SLC" by Chris Bass.

Disclaimer: I have no stake in any of the above. I just happen to like these cars and spent a fair amount of time researching them.
