    I recently had to remove my blower/evaporator unit because of a cracked, leaking case. I disassembled the drier (have a new one) and the expansion valve.
    I need to re-install everything, including my replacement blower/evap, but I have no idea what the black spongy insulation material was on the expansion valve. (I peeled all the old stuff off).

    Is it some sort of spray-on substance?

    The black spongy stuff is typically styrofoam pellets in a tar binder. Older cars used a cork tape with a tar binder. Most good A/C shops should have the stuff. It basically insulates the expansion valve from cabin heat.

    I appreciate the info. Might there be something available at my local auto parts store that would suffice?
    Maybe at a hardware store? Some sort of spray-on substance? The stuff on my car was definitely black and spongy...

    Greg its called tacky-tape.Its used to insulate the TX valve bulb.Any A/C spare parts store will have it
