Hey all, Many here may have heard of the recall on the OEM 550 Maranello wheels back in the '90s. Apparently all of the wheels were supposed to be taken out of circulation (Speedlines?) and replaced with BBS Magnesium wheels. Ferrari ran my VIN through the database and apparently the recall was completed in 2001, but only 3 of the 4 wheels on my car are the "replaced" BBS wheels, and the fourth (front left) is a stock "recalled" wheel. Of course, since I have only had the car since 2022 there's a small chance that one of the replaced wheels was smashed and the previous owner (or his shop/dealer) opted to find a used cheapie online and accidentally ended up with an older wheel. My issue now is that the one "old" wheel has cracking and is unable to be fixed. Ferrari of Ontario has been very nice and helpful, except their hands are tied. I don't blame them; Ferrari has supposedly paid for four wheels as per the recall, and it's obviously so long ago that we're past the statute of limitations for any sort of in-depth investigation. Long story short, I need a front stock wheel. Does anyone have any leads on one? No tire needed, and North America preferred. I don't even need a centre cap as I can repurpose the one from mine. Alternately, I'm open to suggestions on how to pursue this - I don't really think Ferrari would bother to help me here, and as a business owner I understand their side of it. Thanks in advance.
I would check EBAY and of course all the salvage places you're bound to find what you're looking for there... Good luck!
My recollection is that the recalled wheels were magnesium...and the replacements were aluminum? Can't recall if the supplier changed or not...
The mods are great wheels and instantly add the $10k back for the cost of the wheels into the value of your 550. Also don't forget about the stock 575 wheels if you end up having to buy 4. I think they look better than the 550 wheels but then...not original to the 550.
here is a photo of my 550 with 575 alloys, so you can compare. Personally I love the look Image Unavailable, Please Login
The original wheels for the 550 were magnesium but prone to breaking and hazard, hence the recall. You can ID Al vs Mag based on the wheel hub + spoke shape. Photos curtesy of Taz but highlight the fundamentally different manufacturing employed between the two wheels, independent of the material used.
The recalled wheels are Speedline Magnesium, they cracked at the steel inserts at the bolt holes. The replacements were BBS Aluminium. Daniel
Correct me if I'm wrong but a way to check if the wheel is correct or not is the wheel that replaced the recalled wheels will be hollow from the back. If it's hollow then the wheel has been replaced.
