Hi, Thinking of buying a 550 in the spring.I know they only do between 8 to 12mpg!! But can anyone tell me what miles you get out of a full tank? Was thinking of driving to Monaco when I get it. Cheers David.
You're gonna get more than 8-12 mpg on long trips. I do around 16-18 mpg on cross-europe trips in the 575 (about the same in the 550). That's with a medium-heavy right foot (i.e. around 100-110mph and flat out around 160-200mph through Germany when possible, which is not that often). At Gumball speeds you're correct about the 8-12 mpg. But the fuel-tank is quite large. I normally do around 250-300miles between refueling with plenty of fuel to spare. The Maranello is a great car for crossing europe. It's what it's built for.
Depends on how you drive, the car has a 100+ litre fuel tank. On a fast drive yesterday the car used a tank on less than 300km (180 miles) Driving sensibly you can do 400-500km (250-300 miles).
About 300mi/tank if you drive hard/city. I think on this tank I got 8.something I drove for 100 miles with low fuel light on. YMMV, but they seem to be very pessimistic. And it takes forever to top a Shark up. Dunno if Dave has beaten this fillup record. I left him half a gallon margin. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yup - VERY hard driving will get you about 200 miles - which is still twice as much as a 993 Turbo, hehehe... It was just too funny during the Gumball where we only refueled every second time the 993's did... But the fuel warning light comes on WAY too early. I had it adjusted on my previous 550. It was about 1/4 full when it came on. I want mine to come on with about 20l (4gal) left - not before. But the Ferrari fuel warnings are known to be very pessimistic according to my garage (when it's at 1/4-1/3 it can sometimes come on downhill or uphill - whichever way it was). Pity Ferrari can't sort it out - it's the same on the 360's. The problem is that you so often find yourself driving with the warning light on that you start not taking it seriously and just ignore it for a long time. :-D
I was taught this simple equasion in driving school: 550 Maranello + Monaco = Who cares about gas prices? Sorry. DL
In the real world where you have to worry about "ze gendarmes taking you to ze Bastille", you'll get 500-550km out of a tank. I found that cruising at higher speeds had minimal impact on mileage compared to puddling around. The exponential portion of the mileage vs cruise speed curve is high up. Not TDi territory, but your bladder is likely to beg for mercy sooner than the shark will demand fresh unleaded.
My 456GT has the same gas tank size and I get about 18 to 20 MPG under normal US driving highway conditions - - 75 to 85 MPH, which means 400 + miles. In the city, Newport Beach conditions, 8 to 10 MPG. Sitting in traffic, I can see the gauge move down. MB PS, where can I buy Premium forf $1.48 per gallon?
Thankyou for all your replys guys, can,t wait till spring!! I run an M5 at the moment and the 550 seems to be not much difference in tank range. Happy New Year!!
I notices the same as posted. About 8 to 14 when going slow and 12 to 16 when wailing at high speeds on the turnpikes. The car coves an amazing amount of distance at really high speeds. It does have a huge tank which it needs. I noticed when I got greedy one day when filling it up, I topped it off to the very brim and the gas guage registered 3/4 full. As I drove it about fifteen miles tjhe guage then went up to full. At first I was confused and thought I had not topped it off all the way, then I came to the conclusion that I must have overfilled it and screwed up the float or sensor that registers the guage. That ever happen to anyone else?
For me, with my short experience, i managed to do 150 kms in town before the indicator came up (which isn't that bad..., the maser had a problem with the fuel tank in the beginning and used to have a break even consumption aka, 1 km = 1 ltr.) But if you drive on highways or so, even pushing a bit, the car can do quite a distance between refuels.
A few of us previously owned E39 M5s (and some still have them), so the comparison is somewhat direct in purpose of the car. --Dan
