OK boys, the clutch release bearing seal replacement went smooth as silk on the '94 512TR/M. Now I have a potentially much more time-consuming Ferrari adventure to attempt: replacement of the A/C compressor, expansion valve and receiver/dryer. The A/C has been needing a rebuild for a few years and I have been planning to remove the entire dash anyway (again) to install a non-shrunk replacement, so it's time to "git er done".

I checked with Maranello Parts today and a Ferrari replacement compressor was $3,400 (yeah, I laughed too). I believe these are Japanese components and I have to imagine they can be obtained elsewhere for less. Any suggestions? The expansion valve and dryer were not too bad ($200 - 300), but I'll bet they can be found for less too.

Thanks for the help. I probably should have replaced the compressor in 2005 when I did the major service, but it seemed to be working fine at that point. Everything looks kinda accessible with some contortions.

    Have a great 4th.

    ...Jim

    Jim,

The compressor typically substituted is either a Sanden SD-507 or SD-508. These can usually be found new for less than $400. You'll need to transfer your "Ferrari-specific" clutch unit. The receiver drier can be matched up to a Parker unit for a Saab...typically less than $40. The expansion valve is off a GM vehicle, though the exact match escapes me. Any good auto parts store can match these up.

    Dear Ferraristi,

    Hi Jim D.

Why replace the compressor? Just have the unit rebuilt. I had mine done by these guys. Same place Ferrari Of Central Florida uses.

I had my AC compressor rebuilt by:

    Super Kool
    1110 S Rio Grande
    Orlando, FL.

    407 422 5932

They also converted it to R134A . Cost a few hundred dollars. Very happy with the job...no leaks (black oil around the electromagnetic clutch )
I bought the receiver / dryer from da F pimp for...ha ha $75.00...a couple of years back....don't want to know what it is now. But! ......it did have the nice "Ferrari" script that no one else will see. :D

    Thanks for all the advice/info.

I took a chance and brought the drier and expansion valve to Car Quest here in Bradenton. It took about 10 minutes to match up the expansion valve and 30 minutes to research the drier, but they had replacements in stock!

Expansion Valve CTC207349 $38.39 (this is a GM piece)
Receiver Drier WPC R104056594PAR $65.54 (this is a Parker unit)

I went in on a Friday morning when the place was not busy and the counter guy was able to spend the time to find the parts. I'll keep posting as the AC refurbishment project continues. Shamile is coming over today to help me disassemble the rest of the dash (that will be another post... or two). Maybe we'll get the AC compressor out and flush the lines...

Say greetings to Shamile for me.. I hope he has his white blazer on - full blown Don Johnson look. Crankin "Heartbeat" on the radio. Good luck with your project. We are here to help if needed. A/C is not my speciality but I am curious on this topic because my air does not work in my TR.

This is a huge mess. I've been under/inside/all over the dash since 9:30 (I had to watch quali for Hungarian GP) and it just will not come out. It's now 1:26 and Shamile is expected momentarily. Perhaps a new set of eyes will help. Aaarrrggghhhhh! I'm going to take my frustrations out on the heavy bag (it gets used a lot during Ferrari projects). Gentle nudging will soon be replaced by crowbar persuasion if something does not give soon (I have not broken anything yet). I have lots of pics and a detailed roadmap up to this point. SHAMIIILLLLLLE...!

    Dear Ferraristi,

OK Chairman.....just for you! My white linen jacket was at the cleaners :) so, I hope this will do. Please note that I still have slick back hair ( what's left ), a pony tail ( smushed by the seatback) and of course.....NO SOCKS !!!

I got to Jim's kinda late today. I had just come back from Miami at about 11pm and didn't unwind till 1:30am. So reading this thread this morning....holy crap, Jim's waitin!

To be honest, Jim got the dash off by himself. I'll let him explain his magic solution....I don't want to spoil it.

We did get the expansion valve off, sort of troubleshoot and trace an electrical fault and go over the removal of the AC compressor. I even got some pix of the HVAC unit for Uzzscorer.

All in all, it was a fun day. Jim has a garage to die for. Sooooo much room ! ....and autographed pix of chicks in very skimpy bikinis. Oh yeah !

Look at you. Your ready for the next casting of Miami Vice - Millenium Series. I am a little disappointed about the blazer being at the cleaners. Don't you know you should always have a spare. Great pictures it nice to see who you are communicating with. I will try to post some pics today. I need to bust out the gold chains and gel for my hair. lol lol.. Nice Diablo. Did you guys ever get the a/c issue resolved and to change to fan thermistor do you have the remove the dash like this. If so I am iffy about that. Looks complicated.

Shamile came over yesterday in the gorgeous blue Lambo roadster and we got the dash apart and the expansion valve out. Now I can't seem to get the AC compressor out (a Sanden 508 BTW). I took off the tensioner bolt assembly but I can't slide the pivot bolt out far enough to remove the whole compressor/pivot bracket. It hits the heater hose. Shamile said I should be able to angle the bolt past the side of the hose, but no go. I can see about 8-9 threads exposed, it can't be holding the bracket in by much. Do I have to take the hose off (please say no). I tried compressing the hose with a broom handle but still no luck. Any suggestions? Here are previously promised photos:

    No No,

I said that in the Testarossa, you don't have that heater hose in the way. In the Testarossa, you back out the bolt till it just hits the aluminum coolant tube. In your TR, I was worried that the bolt would back onto the hose. I thought you might be lucky and could squeak it by. That bolt is guided by the cradle and the pivot point hole....doubt it will angle.

I think you will have to remove that heater hose. I think Silvergts (Adam) needs to chime in here. He has a 512TR and has more intimate knowledge of that model. Adam?
