sheesh - yall are lightweights compared to the fashion commentary I get from my 14 year old stepdaughter.

and thanks, Bill P, I will pass it on to Dad. Anyone of you guys who go to the National, be sure to stop by and say hi to dad - he loves his mid-atlantic team!

Dad asked me to post this for any mid-atlantic f-chatters who might be going to the FCA National next week.

"We'll be meeting friends Thursday afternoon after the Concours at the host hotel, the Ostoff Hotel. We will be in the Hotel Bar between 6:30-7:30ish.

If the weather is forecast to be dry on Saturday then I plan on some gentle exercise with the little blue car on the track at RA. If the forecast for Saturday is wet, then I will do the driving on Friday. It will be a sentimental series of laps because the last time the car was raced before I bought it in 1960 was the Road America 500 at Elkhart Lake in September 1959. Hopefully the fifty year gap will have dimmed the memory of the seized differential the last time it was here. The drivers from that race, Robert Ready Davis and Jack Hergenroether, are no longer with us. As a matter of fact, the only surviving drivers of my car are Gino Munaron and myself.

See you all in Wisconsin and think positive for a dry Thursday and Saturday."

Excellent, I hadn't bothered to open that PH issue yet, but I just did and that article was a nice read. It reminded me of when 0538M, another (previously) local car, was on the cover of PH #110. Your dad gave me some interesting details about that car and its engine at an FCA lunch a few years ago.

Anyway, I'm glad the car came together so nicely and things are going so well.

I was able to talk to dad today about his track time at Road America. The rain had stopped a little before he went out - braking is already a challenging proposition in the drum-braked cars, and even more so in the wet. But the motor was spot-on and pulled like a train. He loved the 4+ mile course and had a blast. It was the culmination of a long journey involving years of racing the beast when he was pretty much just a kid, decades of research when practically no one cared about these old cars, and another 8 years of painstaking restoration. The FCA National next year is a bit closer, in NJ, so watch for him on the track there in 2010. I expect the full mid-atlantic cheering section to be there!!

The car will stay in WI for the next two weeks and will show at the Milwaukee Masterpiece which looks like it will have an amazing gathering of vintage comp and production Ferraris.

Here are more pics of Dad's track time at RA. Pics by Zac Dugger.

Am working on getting some video and have some that was shot on my own camcorder that I will need your help with, Ed. I'll PM you later this week.

did anyone see the article in the new auto italia about the 500 mondial (0424md(0564md)) doing the mille miglia? They had a pic of it in the 1955 24 hours de hyeres with the car painted blue and numbered 8. Coincidence............?

0564(0424)MD is in the very good hands of Pierre Mellinger who ran it the MM this year. It is about to undergo a full resto, I believe thru Classiche in Modena, but I could be wrong.

Like our car, its first owner was a French privateer named Dupont. Our car (driven by Gino Munaron) and 0564(0424)MD both ran the 24 Hours d' Hyeres in May 1955 - our car was #10 for that race - two French Racing Blue Mondials in the same race!

    Here you go.

Part of the fun for Dad at these events is meeting Ferrari and racing dinosaurs he has been friends with for decades and those he has known, but never met.

He sent me the following message and picture to post.

p.s., I should have some track video to post soon.

"To me there were several memorable occurrences at the FCA National Meet this year. After the judging at the Concours on Thursday, Tom Schultz (author of the two definitive books on the history of Road America) came up to me and asked if I would like to meet Augie Pabst. As some of the older folks will recall, Augie was hugely successful with the Scarab on the road racing tracks around the country winning both USAC and SCCA National Championships. He also had very good results with the Ferrari 500 MDTR which had one of the four 625 motors installed. According to Augie the combination made it a very light and nimble car with plenty of horsepower. For Telaio chasers it was 0612 MDTR.

Of course I said yes to Tom’s question and I was also then introduced to Dick Wuestoff who co-drove the Ferrari with Augie in the Road America 500 in September 1959, in which they garnered a ninth place finish. My car was also in that race exactly fifty years ago and had the differential seize at about the 200 mile point of the race. That failure led to the opportunity for me to buy the damaged car the following spring. This meeting was fairly unique and special to me as there are fewer and fewer of the drivers from that era still with us today. The following is a photo of Dick on the left and Augie on the right."

Admiral: We all need another Mondial fix! So my question, we all know now of your car's great victories, but what cars and drivers fell to defeat in its quest for glory? Tell us a bit of what the rest of the field was like in those races so well run! M

Dad was invited to show the Mondial at the Milwaukee Masterpiece show last weekend. It was a fantastic gathering of important Ferraris (which was the featured marque). Impressive setting and lots of great people. There are picture threads in Vintage, Chicago and North Central forums.

The blue car won its class - here is a short video clip.

It gets home tomorrow night, so if anyone is in the Crystal City area . . .

I tease dad about bringing the car to the Donut. You never know.
