I have a 2018 488 and a deposit for an allocation for the 296. I have not driven them back 2 back, so interested to hear if anyone has had time in seat on the 296 that can shed some light. When I tested a 296, It felt like the 296 was quicker 0-60, but didn’t have the hit taking off from 50- 70 that my 488 has. I do more track than street, and that’s a key spot for accelerating. Thanks.

There are only a handful of 296 that have made their way into customers hands so not sure how many good replies. Did you post in the 296 forum as well?

Look at the MPH the 296 puts up. Yes, it's faster.... but it looks like it has special needs.

    Est. 1/8 mile 6.9 s @ 119.9 mph
    Est. 1/4 mile 10.4 s @ 148.5 mph

I can't get jiggy with Ferrari's current design language. It just doesn't work for me. :(

Despite the crazy numbers, 296 is missing something, doesn't look special.

Driving a 458 you know in your bones you're driving a legend, it's perfect.

So 296 is only 10.4 sec in the 1/4? I would of thought it was around 9.9… humm

I've driven them all, F8 is my pick. 488 probably the best bang for the buck. The 296 was an extremely engaging & enjoyable drive, but I'm just not a fan of the looks or interior, but that is just my opinion. Very early stage hybrid tech is also concerning.

Owned 458, 488 and now F8. I drove the 296GTB. To me the 458 sounds the best but the F8 is the best of the three based on refinement, better tech, acceleration and looks. The 296 is extremely fast and sounds good. However, it’s a bit small for me (I’m 6’2) and I’m not sure about the looks. To me the F8 is much more aggressive looking. Have a 296 on order but not sure I can ever sell my F8.

Trap speed is better tell. 148mph trap speed is nuts, Tesla Model S Plaid level, that is easily sub 10sec, maybe as low as 9.7sec, not really far off from SF90. The performance of 296gtb is absolutely mega. The look is ok.

    458 121~125mph low 11 to mid 11
    488 129mph~133mph mid 10s to 11
    F8 137mph to 143mph high 9s to low 10s
    296GTB 148mph~ easily sub 10s

Every 5mph trap speed increase is huge difference in terms of what you feel in real life rolling acceleration and exponentially faster higher it goes and more difficult to achieve.

The SF90 deisgn clues do not translate well to the 296

Exactly my thoughts. Who cares? How about handles? How about braking feel? How about weight?

in this regard, I thought the 296 was positioned as a fun driving machine. That’s what I’m really interested in.

I can tell you with my 458, I can care less about other cars beating me 0-60 or too speed I’ll never reach. I win in the fun factor! It to mention the looks…

The thread starter asked about rolling acceleration between 488 and 296. My responds was simply answering his question objectively.

With each gen the handling, breaking, weight improved. For example 488 is lighter than 458 and handles a lot better. 296 is quite light for a hybrid and will outhandle 458, 488, and F8. I have had all 3. They all really great cars, sound no question 458 is hard to beat, last NA V8, it has something unique that makes it a guarantee classic. Speed is not everything. However, it does play a major role for everyday and spirited driving. 458 is not a slow car by any mean, it is quite a jump from F430. Each gen Ferrari makes significant improvements. 296 has potential to be last of its kind, window of opportunity before everything become EV is narrowing.

    Well said...

  23. What?

The last of its kind? What kind would that be? Hybrid? I think companies will be making hybrids for quite some time to come.

Now, a 458, 488 and really the F8 (or Pista) might really the be the last of its kind -- y'know, the kind that is a pure ICE?

I have a 2016 488 spider with a 296 GTB and GTS on order. I had a demo 296 last weekend from my dealer. To me it is another level…but very different. It’s a slightly smaller car, but more precise, more responsive…the tech in the car is excellent. The sound of the engine is immense, and it is nice to be able to pull away from the house in electric mode and not disturb the neighbours. Personally I love the looks. It’s a real modern take on the 60s/70s design language. They are expensive though!

I have a 2015 458 Spider which I just love. After the wife test drove a 296 twice (Ferrari Challenge in Indy and at our dealership a few weeks later), she told me how much she enjoyed the car. Who can argue with that? We ordered a GTS. It will be painful to move on from our 458 but time marches on and I can always find another 458 at a later date. I do like the 296 styling and the smooth shifting 8 speed dual-clutch trans, but agree that we will give up a small amount of interior storage space.
