So it’s been about a week with the 2014 458 and I have a few thoughts I would like to share.

First for background I’ve owned various exotics and production cars. Huracan, GT3 (15), R8 (two of those), too many 911’s to count, other Lambo’s and a host of other misc fun cars. About 20 in the past 5 years.

So first, let’s clear the record—this is one opinion from a car nut and nothing more or less. If some comments rub you the wrong way, click out now.

    Brand:

Huracan – Younger, hip, fresh, quasi nuvo, kinda the rebel kid.
458 – The benchmark, established, a little stuffy, F1, well hell it’s a Ferrari nothing more needed.

    Looks:

Huracan: It’s low, it’s sleek, it’s eye catching, very slick, modern
458: Sexy, very proven, ideal lines and purpose, pina did an amazing job—classic to be.

As a side note, Huracan was like driving around like a rock star—people went crazy. 458 is certainly more ho hum, not as much attention to say the least. However, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing at all.

    Interior Seats:

Huracan: Extremely comfortable and no complaints
458: Seats are good just can’t get it quite right, but solid

    Electronics/Infotainment System

Huracan: Winner period. 12” screen, Bluetooth music stream, NAV that is usable, crisp interface, everything just works with lastest tech
458: Old, hard to use (or at least get use to), nothing special, reminds me of 90’s car

    Shifting

Huracan: Transmission was never quite there for me in Huracan. Rough shifts.
458: Smooth, amazing, fast, leaves me speechless

    Speed/Get up and go factor

Huracan: Okay, it’s fast and that can’t be argued. Like crazy fast.
458: More subdue but in a fast as **it kinda way. Let’s be honest, this car is faster than street legal and I just love the I’ve got it if you need it factor.

    Sound:

Huracan: The various setting make it very loud and the down rev’s are like no other exotic I’ve owned. It’s a head turner on sound and VERY powerful. Clean, loud, it’s all there.
458: Sport is pretty worthless, but Race is quite nice. It’s the Ferrari ‘sound’ and VERY distinctive.

If you want loud—get a Lambo. No question.
If you want sexy and 'that sound you love', grab the 458.

    Traction:

Huracan: Owned the 610-4 so the 4 wheel keeps it planted—for good or bad.
458: That back can kick out, but also allows for a little more fun. But not as confident when ‘going crazy’ as Lambo (looking forward to 580-2 to give me some more latitude like 458)

    Steering:

Huracan: Fake fell and really hated it. I ordered Dynamic Steering and that is the issue.
458: I feel engaged with the car (like GT3) amazing 'with it' connection.

Tracking: Have not driven 458 out at COTA yet, so TBD. Have a feeling it’s going to be a great thing.

If anyone has any other questions regarding comparisons, feel free to ask.

Net/net. I like the 458 overall without question. Yes Huracan is a modern day high HP beast. Best electronics without question. But there is just something about a Ferrari…we all know that ‘feeling’. Whatever that ‘something’ is…it’s not what I ever felt in Huracan.

    Winner (for me): 458. Period.

I have had both at the same time and agree with above except:

Steering and feedback on Huracan was good (didn't have dynamic steering)
The gearbox on the Huracan was the fastest and smoothest I've ever felt on any car including 458,GT3 , Mclaren and all Porsches just to name a few.
Huracan is fast but I've raced it against 458 and very close from a dig (without launch) and from a roll. The Lamborghini is a bit faster but unless taking advantage of the launch control and AWD it's not as big a difference as I thought compared to the 458.
    Electronics agree no contest
Looks are subjective but from most angles especially the front I preferred the Huracan
Sound no contest lamborghini imo sounds better although some people find the pops overdone and a bit artificial.
Winner ? Don't know love them both but sold the Huracan to make room for my 488

You are comparing the last generation Lambo to the previous generation Ferrari. The proper comparison is with the 488 and apart from sound that car murders the Huracan.

I own both today. My 458 spider is also a 2015. Simply put, the lamborghini wins on looks and comfort, but is no match for the 458 in performance and engagement. My favorite is my 458.

I understand from instrumented testing that the Huracan is considerably faster than the 458 both in the straights and on tracks. It better be with AWD and a much higher capacity engine.

I don't own a 488, so can't. Have you owned both, if so (not merely driven), please feel free to post your own comparison of how it "murders" it.

Like I stated, I sold my Huracan for the 458. Both have strengths and weak points IMHO.

I own a Huracan and I have a 488 on order. I can say that I have nothing bad to say about the Lambo. It gets it in every department. Fast shifts and suspension is great. It is loud if you want but quiet as well. I put a Capristo on mine and love it. I think it is a solid car and lots of fun. The best for me is I can get it and don't have to buy another Lambo or stay in line. I like the no bull**** deal with Lambo. Ferrari and all that good customer **** is a lot to deal with.

Are you keeping 610-4 when 488 arrives? Would be great to have both in the stable.

Yes. I am going to buy an Aventador SV Roadster and that may cause me to move the Huracan. I'm still mulling it over. I may just keep all of them. I should of said that I do believe the 488 would be a spectacular car. I never did like any radio in the standard Ferrari.

Fantastic! Great position to be able to have the ability for such a diverse selection.

Congrats in advance on SV and 488

I had a Huracan behind me at a stop light and the guy started revving the engine. I thought there was some kind of monster behind me.

    It just sounds evil!

The car rocks. I don't see how anyone would be disappointed with one. You can quiet them if you want in Strada. It closes the valve and it gets normal.

I agree car is great. I don't have enough in the 'fun money' fund for both, so I had to choose.

Thanks for the info. Deciding if I should go with a used 610-4 or wait for the new 580-2. Not tracking the car much and want something fun to drive. What are your opinions in terms of fun factor, usability and value? Also we can add in depreciation as well. Haha. Thanks in advance.

I have a 580-2 on order (will be tough to let 458 go, but will make that call in April). I think it will be more 'fun' than 610 based upon all of the track reviews I've seen thus far. 580 is getting amazing reviews.

Depreciation is certainly another thing. My 610 stickered for $287, bought for $267, sold for $275 (on consignment in summer last year) and dealer kept difference (so I drove for free--and kept tax credit with dealer, which was rolled from another car anyways). Now they are going for $245 or less. So, like any exotic, yes it can hurt if you buy wrong (or even 'right').

580 came in at $228 sticker (minus a decent discount, but nothing to get excited about). At that price, it's probably a 10-15% hit first year is my guess.

I traded my LP 550-2 after 12 months and bought a new 458 in 2014. I know the Huracan is supposed to be much better than the Gallardo but honestly I hated the Lambo for driving around town. Never tracked it as I did the 458 (which was off the charts). I doubt I would ever buy another.....The one good thing is you can typically buy new Lamborghini for a steep discount off MSRP which helps a little on the depreciation curve (as you noted) However, nothing better than buying a NEW Ferrari in early model years and you typically get to drive not only for free but at a slight profit margin. I'm certain my 488 which should arrive in 8-12 weeks I will be able to trade in for the spider with zero extra out of pocket given the appreciation of early allocations.....

Yeah 550 vs 610 is night and day. 610 is very easy DD--almost too easy.

Completely different in every way from 550.

Enjoy the 488--should be a fun ride!

Thanks for the feedback. Large discounts? Talked to a few lambo dealers this week. Both are refusing to give more than 3% off asking prices on used 610-4s. Cars were priced at 219 and 224k. Msrp 289 and 279k plus extras. Miles 5k and 2k

Wow they dropped even more than I thought. Thats a lot of car for $219!

Make sure if you buy one it has a lift. MANDATORY on 610. I don't have on 458 and fine, but 610 is so low, would scrape even over small bumps or angles.

Yes the 458 definitely sits higher than most sports cars. I would absolutely need one if I got the huracan.

I had a lift on mine and didn't use it that much. It's a nice option but not sure it's mandatory if you're careful..

@IPO1 - .. You summed it up beautifully .. "there is just something about a Ferrari…we all know that ‘feeling’. Whatever that ‘something’ is…it’s not what I ever felt"
