I presently have a 2018 488GTB - (love it) but am thinking to 'trading' to a 458 Spyder just for a different experience. I like the fact the 458 is normally aspirated. Will I be disappointed? I understand the 458 is more 'visceral' which I consider a good thing. Thanks in advance for comments - this forum is amazing.

Depends on your type of driving, but you'll likely miss power for sure.

However, the NA sound and going top down (plus the fact that the 458 is pretty fast!) will more than make up for it. At least in my mind.

If you really care about speed, the 488 is better. If you want a pure Ferrari more old-school, with amazing engine note, the 458 will do the job like no other.

Also, I do believe the 458S will be a true classic and it's therefore likely a great investment as well.

I agree with the comment above. Unless you're able to get 10/10ths out of the car you probably won't notice much performance difference and the sound of the 458 will make up for anything you do notice

I have a 2014 458 Spider and would not trade for either a 488 or F8 - Not that they are not awesome cars and steps ahead in max performance but for me the Pininfarina styling and normal aspiration are irreplaceable. And as previously stated I have nether the opportunity nor the talent to wring either to their max capabilities so any performance advantage the 488 and/or F8 might have I would probably never be able to experience. The only tangible advantage I can think of (other than styling - and that is all about taste) is the fact that you can drop the top while in motion in the 488 and F8 Spiders and cannot in the 458. Frankly, as complex as the tops are I would probably not lower it in motion anyway but it has been voiced as an annoyance by some folks.

BTW just to avoid you getting flamed by hyper-sensitive Ferrarista's "convertibles" in Ferrari-speak are Spiders with an "i" - Lambos are Spyders with a "y" - Just a heads-up.

Good luck - IMHO you can't go wrong with either - both are flippin amazing!!

    Cheers :)

You’ll love the 458S. I’ve had mine over 3 years and sometimes manage to use most of its capabilities. It’s pretty much a DD and a keeper.

I am waiting for the F8S which arrives in a few months. IMO it’s sufficiently different than the 458 to warrant both.

I also did some stuff (Kline cats and exhaust, DME tune, Novitec springs and spacers) to add to the ownership enjoyment.

Thanks for your thoughtful response! Much appreciated. Yes, I love my 488GTB and its awesome on the track but like you say, no way I'm driving anywhere at its limits. Oops, I knew about the "i" ... let's call it a typo.

Typo indeed :) :) You will love the 458 Spider should you get one - That said the 488GTB is just plain sick in all respects - absolutely beautiful cars from any angle IMHO and always something cool about a Berlinetta - Either way we are fortunate to have to make sure "hard" choices :) :)

    Cheers!

If you track your 488, then I would absolutely keep the 488. If you don’t track your car, then going to a 458 Spyder you likely won’t even notice any performance differences and the sound/convertible will be much more enjoyable.

The 488 is faster, but overall it sucks.

The 458 is much more of what a true Ferrari has always been and why people have historically been attracted to the brand over the last 50 or 60 years.

I just ran across this video the other day and the guy speaking, while somewhat rough around the edges, pretty much perfectly sums up why you'd want to own a 458. In a word, it's a brilliant car; easily one of the best, if not the best, modern Ferraris ever produced:

To tell the truth there is very little I don't like about my 488GTB. It's absolutely beautiful and a great performer. I would like a 'better' exhaust note but that is sort of trivial in an overall sense. I have had the 488 for 3 years and was just looking for something 'different' to play with. I've had quite a few Ferrari's but 'skipped' the 458. :)

Well a couple options come to mind that I am sure you have already considered but in case not - From an exhaust standpoint there are lots of options - Capristo, Tubi etc. Have a Capristo on my 355 and is sounds amazing - had a Tubi on the 360 I owned and felt it was too high-pitched (just my taste). Fabspeed also makes some great exhausts and all three have representation on FChat.

The other option if financially feasible is just add the 458 Spider and have both - Nothing wrong with multiple Ferrari's :)

Should you go with the 458 Spider I think you would really enjoy it - If not, there are plenty of 488s and unbelievably some F8s on the market already.

Best of luck -Take care :)

Yep, aware of these vendors. I have a Tubi on my 512TR. I used Tubi on my 360 and 430 but didn't modify the 488GTB (except to add a remote switch to keep the gates open). Thank you for your comments.

I briefly test drove a 488 Spider and a 458 Spider back to back about two years ago, both with the top down.

Three things stood out in favor of the 488.

The extra power, especially down low in the RPM due to the extra torque.
It had a smoother more compliant ride.
The chassis seem more rigid with noticeably less shake over bumps.

I still ended up buying a 458 Spider because at that time it was considerably less money and I felt it would hold its value better.
The NA sound was also a factor. I had to really get on the 488 to get the exhaust to speak up and it just didn't have the voice the 458 has.

If I already had a 488 GTB would I trade it for a 458 Spider? If I did it probably would be because of the Spider's top down experience rather than just the exhaust sound. A 488 Spider would give you a better exhaust experience than the 488 GTB as well.

It's a pretty bid step down in terms of driving abilities, especially if you get the 458 Spider.

The 488GTB is very stiff, but the 458 Spider is incredibly soft. You don't need to push the car to experience this. Simply drivjng down the road at 90 km/h will make the car shimmy and shake around you as you pass creases in the road. It's not a bit slower, it feels a lot slower, and it is. If sound is everything, but everything else takes a backseat to that, sure, go ahead. But as far as driving goes, the 488 is far superior. I don't think a 458 Spider would feel anymore visceral, just less capable. Brakes are a bit of a step back, steering feels a bit more darty, and the gearbox less refined.

Go drive one for an hour or two. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't.
