Hi all, I’m looking into purchasing a 458 spider, any options that I should look out for that are must have’s? Any years to avoid? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I have a 2015 458 Spider and find the "Pit Lane" (cruise control) a very useful option. I would highly recommend looking for a car with the back up camera. I would gladly trade some of the other options on my car for a camera. I find it hard to believe that the original owner did not order the camera. The front end lift option would also be desirable but if you are careful and have under body protection added such as the Slip Lo product you can protect against damaging the front bumper cover. A minor item is to check the Engine Cover hydraulic struts as the heat from the engine takes a toll on them. They are easy to replace ($90 or less) and will avoid having the cover slam down. Other than that my 7,300 mile car has been flawless.
Very helpful and I thank you very much. Do you have the electronic rpm indicator on the steering wheel? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I have a 2014- Would totally agree on the back-up camera- I use mine a lot and it works great- especially given how limited low-end rear visibility is with a 458 Spider. I would push harder for the front lift- I pretty use it every time I drive the car. The folding electronic mirrors are quite handy if your garage is tight or you spend time in bank drive-thrus etc. (Comes with one of the seat packages usually I believe- I had my car a year before I knew I had it! ) but again not "necessary"- stay away from the stupid HLE (engine stop/start) "feature" - if it has it though it is easy to turn off (mine does not thank goodness)- The LED shift lights on the wheel are super cool and fun and make you feel like your LeClerc but not "necessarily" IMHO. Otherwise most options are trim, wheels, endless carbon fibre options, seats, stitching, AFS headlights that move with the car (very cool but probably not "necessary") etc. which are all about your personal taste and impact the price and value but not necessary. I don't think and have not read of any years to avoid. Apparently the earlier ones have software that allows for cracking and popping on deceleration/downshifting that some people like and was changed in later years- Again just personal taste. Mine has 10k miles on it and has been flawless. Secondary air valves needed replacement since CEL came on (apparently fairly common) - otherwise just standard annual/bi-annual/annual/major maintenance cycle. Good luck- Prices are climbing but selection is still good- Obviously get one with meticulous and complete maintenance records. You can afford to be picky. Cheers and keep us posted- Pics when you get her!!
I do have the RPM lighted steering wheel. It Is entertaining, especially when I give my friends a ride. I shift by ear not so much using the lights.
I think that if you get the front suspension lift that if automatically then includes the movable headlights. Thats how it is on my 2015 Speciale Aperta. I would get the suspension lift for the simple reason of resale because if the next buyer knows he needs that, then your car would be eliminated from consideration if you don't have it. Also I would not want the cameras at all. I mean c'mon are we wimps or what? These cars have a wheelbase no longer than my 2013 Shelby GT 500 or my 1969 Camaro RS/SS so they are very easy to get used to when parking them. Plus, just use your mirrors. Those buttons that the cameras are mounted to on the front and rear are messy and not appealing in my opinion. Enjoy the hunt.
Wow this is really awesome and I really can’t thank you all enough for helping me out. Nothing beats real life experience. Will definitely keep you posted. [emoji120] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Ha! Great point on the camera(s)- and funny as well I could be wrong but think the front camera/sensor is only there if you have proximity warning (I dont)- the rear camera is pretty well integrated and never bothered me- Again I could be wrong. I agree with you on normal parking but where I live there is low crap in some places that the camera sees that I would not and potentially could jack my rear diffuser- Normal parking I usually don't use the camera but do like to see what I might be backing over. Just me Speciale Aperta- YUM- The Holy Grail of 458s IMHO- Awesome car! Cheers
I have front lift on some of my cars...but have never used them. So I bought a 458 Spider without lift but with: - the big forged wheels - carbon driver zone and leds - carbon racing seats - 2013 8k miles...like a later car with low miles. It really makes it perfect for a weekend drive! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Gorgeous car man. Are you original owner? Want to sell it? Lol [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Thanks, yeah, I know that rear diffuser can be a big trouble especially if its carbon fiber. I'd say we're all having a pretty good time with some awesome rides. Here's two pics of mine when it was coming out of the dealership in Austin Tx. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Absolutely gorgeous! Especially love the interior colors and finish. Drive safe and in good health. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Thanks Zaim. As I have probably have said, enjoy the hunt. Don't worry about the money, whatever that turns out to be it will be. I originally started my hunt looking for a 458. I planned on hunting for quite some time because I didn't want to make a "mistake". As it began to turn out, I was having a good year business wise and decided to go into a "Speciale coupe" however those specs are even harder to find and with my current collection of things it had to be a certain way. So a few more months went by, business was continuing to be very strong and this SA popped up and I bought it just as quick as I didn't want to miss out. So, if you do find what you're looking for, and you will, jump on it or someone else might.
No not mine...its for sale at a friend: https://realartonwheels.com/inventory/1989-ferrari-348-tb-bianco-2/
If I were to buy another 458. I would pay top dollar for one with the below options: -carbon fiber racing package -carbon fiber racing seats -carbon fiber B post (spider only) -carbond fiber rear moulding -colored stitching -shields -carbon fiber driver zone (steering wheel with lights) -yellow tach -rear parking sensors -yellow calipers -horse stitched on headrest -in/out mirrors -20inch forged -alcantara headliner -electric steering column -458 Speciale La Ferrari style bridge (rare) (No lifts, no cameras) Sent from my SM-G977U using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I don't on mine. It's a cool feature, but not essential when you can alternately watch your tachometer like you would have to in virtually any other car. The carbon fiber wheel I would not want to be without though. I like the feel and look of it a lot. I also have the front end lift but have only used it once or twice. Everyone's situation regarding ground clearance may be different here. For me and my 68 year old eyes, unless the camera view is very high in definition (not that great on the 458) it may only show you what you just hit. I find the proximity sensors I have pretty helpful. I agree the Pit control (cruise control) is very convenient to have. My car did not have it installed from the factory. I had my Ferrari dealer add it for me at a cost of around $1700. It looks and works totally stock.
