    Hi All

I am taking delivery of my dream car, a 458, on 16 March and I am considering the steel Novitec Exhaust with flap regulation for the 458.

However, before I did some careful man-maths and realised a 458 was in reach, I was looking at McLaren 570s and the McLaren dealer over at Ascot, when I mentioned I might fit the 570s with a Novitec exhaust, said he would recommend against it because of the few cars he had seen from customers which had gone up in flames, without exception they had all had aftermarket exhausts fitted.

That's given me slight pause for thought - although perhaps unnecessarily!

I would be really interested to hear from anyone who has had the Novitec system fitted on their 458. How long have you had it and has it caused any issues for you at all?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Mike

Yes, I did have that thought!

I suppose I'm just after some reassurance from people who've lived with the system so I can remove the slight lingering doubts which might prevent me from going for it!

I am fortunate to own a 458 Spider, a McLaren 600LT, an F8 and 812 GTS both with Novitec exhaust systems. McLarens are delicate, and the modern Ferraris are too quiet, but the 458???

Personally don't think the 458 needs any modification to the stock exhaust. Perhaps you may want to add the Forza Componenti controller - https://www.forzacomponenti.com/shop-ferrari-1 because the difference between valves opened or closed is sometimes too much change. But that's all I'd do.

To me, the Novitec system is awesome but only worth it for the F8 (because it's super quiet in stock) and for the 812 because of the large GPF they added given the EU regulations and I wanted that true V12 howl.

So it's not that I think the 458 is too quiet - in fact, my understanding is that if you have the Novitec system but don't install the sport cats the volume remains the same, it's just the character of the noise which changes. I think the Novitec system is closer to that F1 style shriek than stock and that's why I'm thinking of changing the system.

But thanks, I may consider that - especially once I've had the car for a while and am more used to how the stock exhaust sounds both while the valves are opened and while they're closed!

I would strongly suggest you wait a few weeks before making any changes like this. You might very well be totally happy with the 458 as is. It sounds wonderful as is and as said previously, a simple controller may be all you need if you want more than stock.
    Enjoy your new car!

I hear ya. I get that F1 sound thanks to the novitec in my GTS. But I did add sport cats to it in order to really make it that way.

I’d talk to Dylan from Scuderia parts about the 458. I personally don’t like to mess with it too much unless you’re really unsatisfied with the sound. That was the case mostly with the F8, but not with the 458

@Snewton94024 - thanks! Yes, I think I will give it a few weeks first as you say, to really experience it properly before making any decisions. It's impossible to tell from a test drive, where you are unfamiliar with the car and barely get to open it up.

@Petrolhead#32 - thanks! Funnily enough, it is actually James Vincent-Jones over at Scuderia Parts that I've been talking to about the exhaust!

Just have your dealer or do this yourself and pull and plug the vacuum lines off the stock exhaust valves. Drive it that way for a while and see what you think.

While I don’t agree that the 458 sounds acceptable stock, I do absolutely agree you should listen to it stock and decide for yourself that is the right advice.

    To answer your q’s:
    - I have full novitec setups on 2 exotics and both operate flawlessly. My 458 has most of the Novitec catalog on the car and has been a dream. As with most things dealers say - pure nonsense

    - Everyone has their own opinion - mine is that 458’s are 10x better with full inconel exhaust. If you don’t want to pony up for inconel, next best thing is SS, and I recommend full headers-back. If you want to manage the noise, valve it. But really to me these cars aren’t “born” until they get opened up with proper exhaust headers-back. The experience is too unique to pass up, no one ever, ever ever says “its too loud” they just say “WOW”

    enjoy!

Thanks Rory, that is all very helpful.

The system I'm looking at is SS rather than Inconel. The Inconel probably eats a bit too much into the money I've got set aside for maintenance if anything goes wrong. What is the difference between Inconel and SS? Is there any difference in sound? Is one lighter?

Lighter and to my ears, more high pitched esp at high RPMs. That true F1 sound.
The stainless is 80% of the sound for 30% of the cost, can’t go wrong there. But if you want that extra 20% and don’t mind paying for it, it’s there.
If you can only do 1 - either inconel exhaust alone or the whole setup in SS (at one point I think the headers were inconel-only but I don’t recall for sure), do the whole setup.

I have a Novitec on my F8 and love it no issues. I had a Novitec on my McLaren GT also no issues except one I tracked it once I got a warning cats overheating. I pulled over and didn’t track it since…

@StevenF8 Thanks Steven - have you tracked the 458 with the Novitec?

Fuchs makes the exhaust for Novitec for Ferrari cars. I am not sure who they use to make the exhaust for Mclaren.
I would look into Fuchs and see who is a dealer for them to save a little more where you are not paying for just a brand.

With a controller button, it allows you to leave the valves always open. Quite simple to install and very affordable

I have Novitec exhaust with forza remote on my 12' 458 and it sounds marvelous, and zero issues. If my car was a 10 or 11' without the software upgrade i probably wouldn't have added any exhaust to it, my first 458 was a 10' and sounded amazing stock.

your thread title btw will make people think that novitec exhuast causes problems...what does a mclaren have to do with a 458...just saying!

Thanks for the response, Tarek. Glad to hear there have been no issues. I think I will probably bite the bullet in due course.

Regarding the thread title, I'd like to think people would take 30 seconds to actually read the post before arriving at any conclusion that I am saying Novitec exhausts cause problems! I'd be happy to edit the thread title for those people who don't read beyond a headline, but unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do so!

As for what does a McLaren have to do with a 458, the point is that I was told (rightly or wrongly) that problems had been seen relating to Novitec exhausts on a McLaren 570S. If that was true, then clearly it raises at least a question as to whether you should be concerned about Novitec exhausts across the range of vehicles they produce them for. Fortunately, all of the responses I've had from 458 owners who have the system installed has been extremely reassuring (yours included), so thanks to all for that!
