My 458 is in for it's annual service and I have been told that one of my rear shock absorbers is leaking. I have been advised to change both rears at a cost of over £4000 or $5000! My car was bought from a main dealer and has a year's power warranty remaining however the warranty claim was thrown out as oil leakages are not covered.

This seems ridiculous as oil would only leak from a shock absorber if the part itself failed!

Has anyone on here experienced failed shock absorbers on a 458 as I wonder if this is a common issue?

I was told that one of my rear shock absorbers was leaking. That one shock was changed under warranty. I was not advised to change both. I never noticed any problems with the leaking shock absorber. But once they replaced it I could hear a light tapping sound at times. So I took it back and they opened and reinstalled the new shock absorber. After that the sound was gone.

    R8's have the same issues.

You might want to check pricing with eurospares.co.uk. I know a lot of people with 599's are purchasing shocks thru them.

Supposedly the magnetic fluid causes wear on the seals causing leaks. Hoping that this wasn't going to be an issue on 458, my R8 leaked at 15K miles - 3 shocks. There is a company that can rebuild them.

Are you in HK? Rumor is because dealer here loses official dealer status in May so are recommending expensive repairs here and there

This is a common issue for rear shock absorbers of old 458. the part cost should be less than $2K.

What is your basis of saying its a common issue? Not sure I've seen other posts on this
