Hello (again!) I'm full of questions at the moment apologies! My new 458 has about 700 miles on the clock and about 50 miles ago I noticed a ticking sound from the engine, I can only really hear it at idle due to the noise of the engine, it doesn't always do it and its not dependant on if its warm or not. If you can imagine the noise of a train going fast down a train track that "chu-chu-chu-chu" noise if that makes sense, its just like that, like its ticking fast. It hasn't done it for the first 600 odd miles which is why I'm wondering if its normal or not! Thanks
I drove a 458 that did what sounds like what you're describing. Reminded me of lifter noise in my XKE.... a rhythmic ticking.
That noise is normal guys, just the cams and other parts spinning Just drive it, enjoy it and don't over analyze
just listened to my Speciale, and just finished three days in the race car. Exhaust aside, all I can detect is whirring pumps and what (we think) are lifters and injectors. Sounds about normal and consistent.
What I don't get thought is it didn't make it for 500 miles though, and even now it's not constant.....if it was normal would it not do it all the time?!
Fair enough! Cheers guys, I'd already emailed my dealer in a bit of panic yesterday so I'll confirm what he says for reference, but I'll stop worrying a bit now! Thank you
Good job j took it! Dealer agreed it wasn't normal and not what they imagined it was. Needs to go back in three weeks for investigative works....! :-(
Hello! Dealer has just called to say its some valve that releases something or other.....not a very good description on my part apologies, its something added to later cars to help with emissions I think, carbon release valve or something? I was busy doing 3 things at once so didn't really take it all in. Anyway they have Vehicle Off Road'ed a replacement so should be up and running again this week without the annoying sound
He mentioned something about the later models having this valve or something which dumps something or other, I'm sure he said carbon or something similar. Serves me right for not listening properly! I will get the full detail towards the end of the week and post, he said he has seen some which are a bit noisy before but nothing like this....
I know this is a very old post, but I just noticed the same lifter ticking-like sound in my recently purchased 2014 458 Italia. In other cars this is NOT considered a normal sound and was a big problem with Mitsubishi 3000GT’s out of the ‘80’s. The fix was to enlarge the hole at the top of the lifter to allow oil flow. My 458 with 5400 miles is going in for next maintenance next week. I’m going to ask if there’s a fix. When I get it back I’m gonna install the Forza remote valve controller so I’m likely not to hear it much! Phil
I hope you will have the noise cured Phillip, before you install the Forza controller. F may claim that THAT was the cause of it all ...
Normal is a word commonly parroted to owners by the dealer when the problem is too expensive to fix under warranty. So long as the engine runs it's "normal". When it stops it's only then that the problem becomes not normal.
