I spoke with my mechanic during my oil change recently, of course he had a gearbox open on the bench. His rough estimate is about 15% are failing so far. The sensors are the only "typical" failure he sees. He is seeing more from earlier model years, but doesn't know if that just because they are older at this point.

Lux Tec seems to be a Great resource for transmission repairs, and lucky for local folks, right here in Austin Tx. The sensors (SAP) on my 2012 failed in February after 16,000 miles.

I remember your post on the 458 FB group. What's interesting about this failure and rebuild is that it appears that Lux Tec were able to source some damaged hard parts, which we have been led to believe were absolutely not available (or maybe they were good used parts from a donor DCT?).

I'm an outlier, but 45,000 miles and tracked, FL heat, serviced once since I owned it (5 years), which was just a fluid change (it didn't need it).

    No problems (DCT or otherwise).

Part of the reason for tracking it was to see how the car would stand up to that kind of use (I don’t abuse it).

I was pleasantly surprised that I experienced no issues in the 40 or so tracking days. I’m of the firm opinion that driving these cars hard adds wear, but certainly they can withstand this type of driving.

Of course it’s been well serviced, but I’m not convinced driving them gingerly helps avoid any type of failure. And I got a great independent mechs ic who knows the car and keeps it rolling.

I gave up tracking the spider simply because I wasn’t feeling safe on track anymore. So, I bought the 458 Challenge Evo, a much better track car.

I daily the 458, it loves being driven every day or so. Still looks great also!

PS, in my previous post, I meant DCT service (the rest of the car has had a ton of fluid changes). I had both DCT fluids changed (there are 2) and the analysis from Blackstone came back clean as a whistle. Tranny has held up well.

Thanks for sharing! I’ve wondered about how analysis of the 2 fluids would turn out.

What year is your 458 spider?

Forgot to mention, the Shell DCT fluid only comes in 5 gallon pails, but only needs half of it.

Luckily, after I bought the Challenge car, it uses the same fluid, so I changed that one also. It’s a race car so probably closer to the ‘abuse’ edge.

If I couldn’t source Shell, I would have used Pakelo, which comes closest in physical and chemical properties to Shell. Most dealers are using it, and my Indy told me it’s important to get as close a match as possible for the DCTs.
