New to the forum....thanks for having me!! Im having trouble deciding on which direction I should go for my next car, I recently sold my 911S and planned on a Mclaren 570S as I'm looking for something more exotic over the Porsche, even though it is a great car there is something about it that is missing....sorry it's hard to explain, but when I look at a 458 I see pure sexy exotic!! I do plan to daily drive it as I live in Florida so my question is this, can a 458 be driven every day or is it more of a weekend pleasure car?? I've never driven one yet so no clue as to the comfort, noise level and drivability....also a little concerned about the amount of miles I would put on it and reliability. Thanks
I have a 911S and a 458. The 911S is more of a daily driver. Throttle response, road feel, noise are significantly more tame. Driving the Italia feels like an "event" in comparison. Also, remember that when it rains it rains into the engine compartment with the 458. I take the 458 to work when it's dry, the 911S (the "beater") otherwise.
The 458 is a great DD. Very comfortable. I think more comfortable than my GT3RS. Buy one and drive. You will love it.
I drive my 458 to work 2-3x a week so its sufficient for dd. Especially with the bumpy road button on. If you want it to shift smooth you can switch the mannetino to wet mode. Its a bit boring that way so I hardly do that. If you want something easier to drive everyday. Check out a 488 gtb or spider. It's much smoother and the increased tq is nice to have when you are driving around town.
I put 10,000 miles a year on my 458 Spider .....all city. I also have a Turbo S. No problem. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There the same thread about a 360, I say while it "could" be a DD I likely wouldn't use mine as a DD...but that's just me.
458 Spider was a better daily driver than my 991 GT3. No need for front lifter and smoother ride in Race Mode with Bumpy Road setting compared to GT3. Much more attention than GT3, takes getting used to.
I also have a 458 (Spider) and 991S. I find that the 991 has more road noise than the 458. Maybe it has to do with the sucky PZeros vs Michelin PSS on the 458. Also, the 458 rides softer in wet mode than the 991 (granted I have the SPASM suspension on the 991).
I have standard suspension on the 991S and PZeros on both cars. I'll have to try wet mode, but my understanding is that "Bumpy Road Mode," wherever the manettino, gives the same suspension as with "Wet." No?
I have a 991TT and 458. The 991 is easier to drive slowly as in daily driving because the throttle is more progressive and gradual. The 458's throttle is very sensitive and I find difficult to drive it slowly as a result. The 458 rides better and does have less road noise, even with Michelin PSS on both cars. That said, you *could* drive a 458 daily, as it is rather practical for an exotic.
I drove mine as a DD for awhile but the exotic-ness wears off. I prefer the 911 during the week and the 458 for weekends. Not to mention the $$/mile depreciation is pretty huge so it makes no sense to just cruise in a straight line and rack up a lot of unnecessary/boring miles.
Mid-engine V8 Ferraris are meant to be special, track ready, and convey a sense of eventfulness. Does one really need or enjoy all that everyday? A daily driver implies that occasional run to Home Depot, Walmart, grocery store, etc. When doing so, the question of sensibility and suitability will eventually arise. Of course, any car can be a DD. Seeing a dirty 458 everyday in congested US highways at 25 mph in Race Mode will give 'eventfulness' a different, arguably non-intended, meaning. The FF or F12 is a much more sensible way to go as a DD, IMHO. True story...a nearby neighbor has a white 458 Spider. I once saw him leaving Home Depot with a few 4x8's sticking out of the passenger side over the leather Daytona seats. With that mental image, one can easily lose the argument on suitability no matter how elegant or clever the justification. Who cares what others think? No one does indeed, including the owner, in this case!
458 is not a very comfortable ride. It makes a bad daily imo. I rather me driving a 911 for daily with more refinement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I drive my 458 a lot, it's almost a dd. One thing I have to add is that the wear and tear obviously increases. Tires have to be replaced, and recently I broke my passenger window switch so now I will have to get that fixed. But this shouldn't deter one from enjoying the vehicle as much as they can.
Major problem is most people that owns these cars are older so getting in and hard is a chore. Even my 19 yr old son complains hard to get in and out and he is less than normal weight. I think the seats take a beating when I get in and out, lol.
Yes. I am a geezer. But getting in and out is worth it. I put red fcar seat covers on. The sun is more than brutal here and getting in and out does chafe the bolsters. Of course ingress and egress would be much easier if l would lose 50 lbs. lol
Tried "Wet" mode on the way into work today. Really does tame the car for daily driving (in the way the 991S feels not in "Sport" mode). Throttle response particularly is less twitchy, allowing a casual focus on driving. But driving on dry roads in "Wet" mode makes me a sissy. Should be named "Comfort" or something.
But it does as advertised. I had to use mine driving thru Oregon in fog and rain during my epic first week of ownership. Seriously saved me. Never had to use it again
thanks for all of the posts, very helpful. I have taken a very serious look at a 991TT but am worried it will feel the same as my 911S and therefore get bored. I want something that is beautiful to look at and have incredible sound, that's why the 458 is such a contender. I have a company car which will be used in conjunction with the 458 but would probably do 10K/year
You will LOVE it. The 458 sounds incredible, looks good, has good performance although not as much as a TTS.
When l first got the 458 spider l drove around in Race mode primarily because the exhaust baffles open at 3000 rpm...it sounded better which made it more fun to drive. After a year l disconnected the vaccuum lines and the baffles stay open all the time regardless of mode. So l drive around in Wet mode in town...softer suspension and smoother shifts ...less jerky. On the highway it's sport or race mode. Have driven over $25k miles and l drive it every day that the roads are not snow/ice covered. So yes, l happily use it as a daily driver. And l drive it 99% of the time with the top down. Best
