Drive both the F8 and 458 every day. It is my opinion that both cars are immensely satisfying Love the 458 analog NA immediate response, engaging feedback and engine music. No desire to sell the car, The F8 has a distinctly more digital feel. You are aware of a slight millisecond lag when accelerating from a dead stop. But then you are also aware of greater torque and power. Love that I don’t have to worry about the durability of heavy hybrid batteries, or regenerative brakes. Love the greater presence of a Ferrari V8 as opposed to a smaller discplacement 6 banger. Also like to external and internal larger footprint
Lol- best looking to me are F8 and Pista but ok ok, ya, the 458 has been growing on me a little….. in black, standing back about 60 feet, at dusk while squinting. [emoji2] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I have spider versions of both, no desire to sell either one and enjoy them both. I know folks complain about the F8’s lack of sound, but it’s a pleasant change for me. The cars are remarkably similar, yet the F8 is clearly a refined version of the 458’s more primitive tones. I go back and forth on looks, which is a tribute to the timeless design of the 458. I’m a fan of the 296, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely I’ll be allocated one. Oh well…..
Great assessment!!! But, how in the world are you able to dive each one of them every day?! I assume you live in Malibu, hence your handle here, but are you retired and or have no kids? lol
Both fantastic cars. Had a 458 spider and now a 488 coupe. Did a 2.5 hour drive this morning in fact. I actually prefer the looks and drive to the 458 (other than the engine note and redline of course). I had heard the f8 was an improvement sound wise vs the 488 perhaps I’m wrong? But I actually really enjoy the 488. Daily drives, sounds like the dream. Continue to enjoy good sir.
Yes you heard wrong. 488 sound much better than F8. Plus on 488 it’s simple to pull and plug the vacuum lines to the valves that open close the exhaust. 488 sound really nice this way. F8 valves are electric and the exhaust is clogged up with GPF filters and you can’t mod the F8 exhaust without voiding warranty.
“you can’t mod the F8 exhaust without voiding warranty.” This is not correct. Yes, Ferrari can decide what will and won’t void the warranty on a whim I guess but if it’s completely unrelated, like my recent rear main seal leak, they can be reasonable and warranty a repair. Would I be nervous about Ferrari covering a problem if the ECU were tuned, yes. Not to derail the thread but I imagine there are folks out there with a $400k+ car that are displeased with the sound that could do something about it but don’t because of these statements. I drove a 488 in Vegas and thought it sounded horrible. F8 is worse you say? Glad I bought a 458, that glorious sound is everything.
The reason mdrums IS correct and you are incorrect is because you can not modify an F8 exhaust WITHOUT ECU 'modification' in some way... so therefore, yes, an F8 exhaust modification does void the warranty-- and any repair that you TRY to get covered under warranty will require fighting and fighting and quoting Magnusson Moss etc and it's just an ugly situation-- your dealer has little control as Ferrari themselves (manufacturer) have cracked down a lot with how claims are made and what information, diagnoses and/or parts must be sent to Ferrari before and after any warranty repair
I was behind an F8 Tributo this weekend at the FCA national event and it was loud as f*k. I can only assume it had an aftermarket exhaust.
I typically sit back and read the back and forth on this issue and I guess I’ll go back into hibernation on it. I meant a tune in particular which I would not personally do. My Tectronic module handles the error code of removing the gpf. But my experience is my experience and a few others that wisely remain mostly silent on the issue as to not engage a winless back and forth. Would love to hear an F8 owner post about their voided warranty experience from removing the gpf. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I drive the F8 spider along the most scenic stretch of PCH in the early morning and early afternoon to and from the office. This stretch of PCH is quite unique which explains why it is filmed for movies, commercials, and photo-shoots. This drive was the reason why I decided to own a Ferrari—to drive it along the coast, inspired by the scene in Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone drives a white Lotus. In the afternoons and evenings, I switch over to the 458 spider, for travel around town in Malibu, Topanga and West LA.
Agreed except replacing the F8’s muffler with an X-Pipe does yield a modest improvement in sound sans CELs or warranty issues. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
There was nothing modest soundwise about the car I heard. We were parked together along with about 50 other Ferrari's and it was vibrating my 458.
Always wanted to hear an F8 with that mod and wondered to my ear the change in sound . That’s a mod that can not really effect warranty for the F8.
Here you go…post #460 F8 exhaust options. GPF delete https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/index.php?threads/F8-exhaust-options%2E-GPF-delete.622430/ Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Wow! just watched those-- great job and thank you for posting them. I love the sound and perfect for me without all the stupid crackling and popping like most aftermarket exhausts... It would be amazing if this actually worked for the F8. I would do it for sure. Maybe Ferrari will actually develop one for the F8 but I'm not holding my breath.
Just saw the 296 recall affecting all produced. Connecting fuel tank pipe may be at risk for corrosion due to contact with the electrical battery pack. owner told not to drive
I've hear F8 with sport cats and GPF delete in person.... sounds different than recordings on a cell phone and played on my studio monitors. In person ALL THESE EXHAUSTS sound different than recordings. My friend here in Tampa has a F8 modded like this It sounds great, sounds like a Ferrari should sound. What I want to hear in person is an F8 with just the rear muffler delete that Fabspeed offers. I just can't think that the sound is much different...maybe slightly at idle with the valves closed because when closed they route the exhaust through the muffler. I have listened to a recording of this mod but again.... recording on a cell phone and I listened thought headphones and JBL and Adam powered studio monitors and there is not much sound difference. In person though it could be better as it usually is better than cell phone recordings.
Nearly identical to a stock F8 at idle, but under load closer to a 488 which has had its bypass valves unplugged.
Blow your warranty and have a problem potentially = big $$$. Besides the F8 is so over-the-top spectacular in every way, exhaust sound is almost completely irrelevant.
