The battery in my 456 is no longer holding a charge and I will be buying a new one soon. I have read many threads regarding this issue but I don't think there is one directed towards the 456 (not that it likely matters). Any recommendations would be great.

Bob- FIAMM recommends the same battery for the 456/M as for the 550/575M, so all the recommendations for those two will work. Those are the following Interstate batteries:

MTP-91 Interstate fits perfectly with slight mod of the insulation ala box cutter. A mere trim.

    Product ID: MTP-91(Automotive Truck)
    Amps: 875
    Cranking Amps: 875
    Cold Cranking Amps: 700
    Voltage: 12
    Termination: A
    Pro-rata Warranty: 85
    Weight: 36.9
    Width: 6.88
    Length: 11.38
    Height: 6.88

    MTP-6H is an alternative.

    Product ID: MTP-H6(Automotive Truck)
    Amps: 800
    Cranking Amps: 800
    Cold Cranking Amps: 640
    Voltage: 12
    Termination: A
    Pro-rata Warranty: 85
    Weight: 40.8
    Width: 6.89
    Length: 10.94
    Height: 7.48

Delco 48-6YR or 48/91-6YR is a substitute for the MTP-91

Dave- I probably need to reorder the two. I have a Word document with all the dimensions you posted earlier. Plus all the FIAMM dimensions on the VR760, the original battery, replaced by the L3 80+. Need to put the dimensions in mm, too. The MTP-91 has more cranking power, costs $40 less, and has the same warranty, but sounds like it is harder to fit.

Incidentally, the fact the Interstates are more powerful than the FIAMMs is an old wive's tale, one I helped propagate. Both the VR 760 and L3 80+ have more cold cranking power than either Interstate battery. Probably originally caused by someone comparing apples and oranges of cranking power and cold cranking power.

    Terry,

I replaced my battery yesterday with the MTP-91 without any difficulties (10 minutes max).

My missing cylinder issue was solved and the beautiful acceleration and sound have returned! There is nothing like driving down the country roads on a beautiful fall day in Minnesota.

    Next is the power steering.

Bob- I love a happy ending. Maybe time for a power steering rebuild thread, but I think there already is one.

These are the two shops that come highly recommended, possibly the NC shop a bit more.

Dave- Just checked the battery in my 575M and it is an MTP-91 as well and that is what my technicians carry in their shop. So I am reordering the batteries again with the MTP-91 on top. Not only is it stronger, but it also costs $40 less, and has the same 85 month warranty as the MTP-H6.
