Well now isn't that an interesting car. An '83 with metric wheels, yet a series 1 dash and seats. No load leveler system either. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. The ad says it is all original, I assume you all know that likely isn't true; it appears to have been painted and I don't believe that is a factory exhaust. It was for sale on Ebay in 2006. I wonder why it hasn't traveled more than 500 miles in the last 4 years.
The exhaust looks horrid..looks like it should be on a low rider..Is there any way that a 400 could be special order that way? just wondering..
Its still not as scary as this one. http://www.gullwingmotorcars.com/detail-1982-ferrari-400i-coupe-used-6274684.html I don't believe the VIN listed.
Yes. And it is earlier than my 365's number. But looking at the condition of both, I'm feeling better about the value that Hagerty and I have agreed on for mine.
According to the workshop manual, the first hydraulic load leveler 400i was 42705. This car received a silver at the 2001 Concorso Italiano when it was owned by a Arthur Lemay of Bouler Creek, CA. Those turned down exhaust tips are absolutely not factory original, and they do look terrible.
These cars now are all 21-37 years old and, as more time passes, more and more have something traumatic happen to them and the number of well maintained cars with verifiable chains of ownership is decreasing.
Yes, they do look horrid. But any of you running rich injection set-ups would probably appreciate the lack of exhaust soot on your rear bumpers after a strong run w/them on. Reducing the CO to 1.6% helped mine significantly. I don't know, w/kids nowadays, I think we're the last generation. I hope I'm wrong.
........................................................................................I really like that car, I never went to see it , But i am thinking about it, I was thinking of using it as a winter car, Is that possible? I mean you can drive Ferraris in the winter can`t you ?
Spicy is due with our first on Feb. 26, he (as yet unamed) will get 18759, likely as a college graduation present.
Alex Leventhal drove a 400i Automatic all year round in the New York City and upstate NY areas. The tread pattern on TRX tires look as though they would make pretty good snow tires. My car is off the road when there is salt on the roads but it has always started well in cold weather and the heater throws out lots of heat so I think that it would make a reasonably decent winter car as long as the snow isn't too deep. The only drawback is that the 19 quart oil sump takes a long time for the engine to warm up fully in the winter.
..................................................Thank you Ashman thats good info, i like the lines of that model, front or back or from the side its a good looking car, it deserves to be driven .19 quarts is alot of oil!
My son will help carry the torch; remember as a 9 year old he preferred the "big one" of your trio. Congrats!
the worst most misrepresented car i ever purchased came from Gulwing. i still have that 400i. motor has oil and water. i had to really beg for the title. on and on sum up con is the word
I viewed the 400i in Livermore, CA, about a month ago and they were asking about 28k or so for it then. The sales Mgr ( Carlos ) said 25-26k could probably take it home. He said an elderly gentleman in his late 70s to early 80s was having health problems and didn't have any use for the car anymore. The battery was down so I didn't get to hear it. I told him he didn't need to jump it that day for I would wait until the battery was charged or replaced to avoid shocking the electrical system. The paint was vibrant and had good luster with no apparent dings, dents or scratches upon initial viewing. Exterior condition was a Strong number 3. The interior had been recently dyed by someone with average experience, it was rather firm (not flaky) as if they took the cheaper route which led to a interior rating of a very weak 3. CPI has a #3 in the $18k range and a #2 in the $30K range. The engine bay was tidy with normal seepage. Provided this car is mechanically sound and passes the interested parties PPI from Patrick Otis, Brian Crawl or Johannes @ Dino Motors in San Mateo, all of these Ferrari Specialists are within 30 miles of this car, I think the current market will bare 20-22k for this average example. The down pipes must go! I'll go back in a week or so and try to get more history and see how this one performs! Overall, I was attracted to this car! The exterior was it strong point. Being a romantic, I am hoping this example is not a shiny wreck! For those interested, let me know what you need prior my next visit around 11/15/10 Cheers GREGORY
..........................Thats terrible news, are you saying you bought a different 400i a while back that they said was running and driving and when you got it ,the car had water in the oil? or thats your 400i they have listed? What automatic did Ferrari use on these cars ?
more info. e-bay car i finally purchased from a seller in Atlanta area. he claimed he drove the car from Texas without problems. then after several phone calls and a purchase no title arrived with the car. i shipped the car direct to Evans Auto in Columbus Ohio. car would not start. circuit board had to be repaired. oil and water mix. right bank had two cly. with 80-100lbs. car could not have run. title arrived. a hand written note saying i bought the car. finally got out of the guy indirectly that it was a Gullwing car. New York state has some serious laws for just this BS. Gullwing had this guy sell the car to evade laws in the state. that is my personal opinion NOT fact as i cannot prove anything. i called the ny stat atty general office and ask what to do next. then i called Gullwing and after maybe 20 calls and lots of excuses got my title from Gullwing. so you go figure. car is not fixable for value.
Holy cow , your head must have been pounding, that really stinks , what color is your car + how is the body ?
This ones been around through the summer. It was listed on San Francisco area Craigslist prior, and, I believe at a slightly higher price. Might have come down two to four thousand since I last saw listing. Might be a good value for someone. Happy hunting.
.......................................................Thanks judge , is this a similar unit to the Gm turbo 400 auto , i remember someone told me my old Bentley Turbo R had a turbo 400 ( GM ) in there, my concern besides motor failure is the trani going bad and not being able to replace it. If vit is a turbo 400 , they are plentiful.
the cars are really solid. once right they are very dependable. mine sit for months and start up and run great. the black car out of Gullwing has right window post showing bubbles under paint. dash needs recovering. the dash has two spots with surface leather missing. one spot on center pod the other under windshield from sun, leather is drawn away from base. my 550 has the same problem. The car would need a total repaint. interior seating good. the circuit board has been fixed and all works. car does run and drive. remember right bank needs head gasket. the top is great has full power. top is lined and was very nicely done. i have three of these and this is the best top job of all.
