    Hey all,

I was working on changing the distributor cap on my friend's '83 400i today and noticed that the old cap and new cap have different cylinder markings! I compared the firing order from what the shop manual stated to the way the rotor rotates inside the cap and definitely the old cap is marked the right way. Anyone else experienced this? I ordered the parts from Dennis McCann in Westerville. It is an original Marelli cap. Are there two different kinds of caps?

    Cheers,
    Aaron

    Aaron,

I ran into this scenario many years ago whilst changing the distributor cap on my BB...Best I can determine, some of these 12 cylinder caps (obviously?) fit other applications (which have different firing orders), even though the caps appear the same physically. Not really an issue, just refer back to the WSM for the correct firing order for your application.

    Regards,
    David
