So here is a question for those in the know. I have heard many 4.7 maser "S" engines in the Granturismo S and the v5 quattroporte S. Love the 4.7 noise. What of their little brothers with the 4.2 engines? Is it possible to get a similar sound with an exhaust swap to an aftermarket? Or will the 4.2 never sound as good? I'm not as worried about the performance side if the 4.2 can sound as good. They aren't that quick to begin with. Looking for good input. Robb
I think no matter what exhaust you put on a 4.2, it won't have as much of the deep bass sound as the newer bigger engines. Conversely, the 4.2 has more of an F1 car sound when you get it into the upper rev range.
Yes, you can. I was offered it at my dealer for my Q'porte '08 4.2. It cost some CHF3,000, so I passed.
On the street cars, the 4.7s sound better. However, this 4.2 set up is one of the best sounding V8s ever, not just for Maserati. I don't remember exactly what they do on these but it's discussed on the Maserati Forum. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnUh4c6tD3k
When I first saw this threads title I thought it was going to be about the "real" Maserati engines from the original GT era. The 4.2 vs 4.7 vs 4.9 ...
For street cars I think the Ferrari 355 has the best sounding V8 that I have heard. Very high pitch. The 4200 is also on the top of the list if set up properly. Higher pitch than the 4.7, but the 4.7 is also on the top of the list. Just got back from Road America after listening to several Maserati GS's racing in the Pirelli Challenge and they sound great, better than the INDY cars also up there
By the way, this 4.7 seen in the Road America paddock is for sale if anyone wants an old loud race car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I agree with that which is one of the main reasons I bought one and spent a pretty coin giving it a full exhaust set up. It was honestly surreal and basically all cars since are a disappointment as far as exhausts go. Most new cars today have the valved exhausts which are loud but don't necessarily sound good.
Great video and sound. Thanks to all for the comments. It is good to see that the 4.2 can sound as exciting as its bigger brother with a little tweaking. Robb
