    Not sure if this is in the correct section or not. I've always wanted to try a lapping day or driving school but just have never taken the time to go, and was worried that I didn't have all necessary the equipment either.

    To make a long story a little longer, I got a scooter the other day and went to buy a helmet. I figured I'd get one that I could also use at track days or whatever. You know, trying to kill two birds with one stone. Turns out I have a large head and couldn't fit a 2XL or smaller helmet over my big noggin. The only 3XL helmet they had will work fine for the scooter but it's only DOT approved, (not SNELL) so I know it won't be accepted at most tracks for use in a car.

    Does anyone have any recommendations for a 3XL helmet that is SNELL approved? I looked all over the net and didn't find anything.

    out of curiosity what is your hat size?

    You may want to try calling/emailing the manufacturers directly, I'm sure at some point they've special built a helmet for some racer with a giant melon. you'll likely have limited options, may have to go with an open face helmet (like what Dale Sr. or Jimmy Spencer used to wear).

    My hat size runs close to 8. I knew I had a big melon but I didn't think it'd be that hard to find a helmet to fit it. There are quite a few DOT approved, I just can't seem to find any SNELL approved.?? I'd actually prefer open face by the way!

    There might be some 2XL helmets that fit. The ones I tried on at a local place were too small though. I'll see if I can find that one locally and give it a try. It's odd that the one I did buy is SNELL approved in sizes up to 2XL but the 3XL is only DOT.

    I have a giant noggin, and have been in your shoes before. There are a variety of Motorcycle helmets available to fit, from XXXL thru XXXXXL. Some are DOT only, some are Snell "M" rated (for motorcycle use). Note that some clubs/organizations allow Snell M helmets to be used at the track in a car, others require the Snell certification to be Snell "SA".

    The only XXXL Snell SA helmet I'm aware of is the Bell M3, a/k/a the "Fathead". It took 9 months after I ordered it for it to arrive (Bell only makes a batch at a given time, then waits until it has a sufficient order list to make another batch). IIRC, around $500-$600. Only available in white, maybe? Nice helmet for automotive use.

    Note also that some helmets, even if the right size, will not fit a particular head well - some folks have narrower but longer heads (looking from above), while others have more round heads, etc. You have to try it on for size.

    Thanks guys I'll see what I can find. The cheap one I bought will work for the scooter, I was just hoping to get away with one for both.
