Good afternoon everyone, I was hoping someone may be able to help us solve a little bit of a mystery that we have on our hands here. To make a long story much shorter, this block was acquired quite a long time ago and after receiving the block physically, it was discovered that it was a prototype 365 GTB/4 engine, the 4th one according to the red book. So basically we’re wanting to know if anyone may know some of the history on this block/engine.

Some peculiar things about this block is that it is drilled for both Daytona and 3 carb manifolds, and based off of the marks left behind, it appears the Daytona manifolds were installed on it for quite some time.

The engine number is 11929, but it appears that the original stamping was milled away and it has been re-stamped in a manner consistent with how Ferrari used to do it (Greg tells me, I don’t have the experience to know that)

I’m including some pictures to hopefully help solve the mystery of if this block has been re-stamped and if it had a previous life before being re-stamped. If anyone knows anything about its history, I’m sure the information would be very illuminating and would certainly be appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Prescott @ GSJFerrari

What about the stamping does Greg say is consistent? The font looks way too modern to me…the ‘9’ does not look period correct. I am no expert, but original stampings from the late 60s/early 70s have less rounded 9s and 6s. It could just be the angle, but your 6 in GTB 6 does not quite match the 9 in the engine number.

Comparing the chassis vin plate for 11929 posted in the thread linked above and the engine block stamping seems to show consistent font. In any case, I can't discern a difference between the two.

Mostly curious if anyone knows anything about this engine either before its installation into prototype #4/11929 or as to why it may have been removed.

    Thanks,

I thought the discussion about this particular block was familiar. See thread here.
