Car looks very clean and very cool! Cant wait to see what you post when its finished!
Final clear today. Boxer trim and other satin black parts tuesday. Ill get the car back before final polish to assemble it. Working around flawless fresh paint is always stressful, so this way Ill be able to touch the car without worry, do what I have to do then they just finish it off after I sort it. Body is ready for boxer trim. Front clam is wet sanded so ready for a polish. Doors are ready for boxer trim as well. Once Im finished assembling the car they want it back to go over it one more time. Manifolds are ready as is the engine and other parts waiting in the bins to go back on. Are you keeping the manifolds white Paul? That will look amazing! I believe that mine was that way originally.
Yes and no. The body was taken down to the minimum material thickness where the high spots show as bare metal and the car is straight. The car had a bare metal respray in the past and they did an exceptional job. No sense taking the remaining polyester off the low spots only to spray it back on and go through the exercise of making it straight again. The pics earlier in the thread show how far we took it down.
365 manifolds were white in the beginning, where in the range the change took place I don't know but then they switched to black on the 365's and remained that way to the end of the boxer line in 84. The manifolds on your car were dealer installed Sport exhaust manifolds (365 manifolds) and had the white thermal coating on them. The way your manifolds are now is correct for 82 as it was when it left the factory. White or black on a 365 wont result in a deduction. My preference is white given the option.
Boxer trim gets done today, they'll tape it off where I showed them so its correct. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Taped off for boxer trim and other areas that need to be satin black. Note the horizontal tape line in the rear of the door jamb under the striker. Thats how it was done originally. Also the tips of the hinges on the body are supposed to be body color so once the hinge cover plate is installed the hinge on the body and the door match. That said I had one original paint car here that had the body hinge black and the door hinge red. Looked wrong and most likely the apprentice that day forgot to tape it right before it went through the booth. So with water base paint today; how does the new paint look compared with the result Ferrari got when the BB was built? Minus the 'orange peel' question previously referenced here of course...
We're using solvent base and clear. The clear is always solvent based even if the base is water otherwise it would run off the first time it got wet. The water base paint has its advantages. I was having tanks painted on a harley I was restoring and the white section with pinstripe was being difficult, couldn't get the shape right as they're all hand done back then so we just washed it off and did it again until we got it right then cleared over it.
As for the result its much better because its difficult to do it that bad for lack of a better word. My Testarossa was beautiful though and original but my 84 boxer was bad, I was really surprised how bad.

I didn’t realise that paint work reflection had a slimming effect. All kidding aside, the car looks amazing.
Should be ready to drive in what. . . . . 2 days? ;-) Car is just flying along. Beauty, but I'm bias.

Wow. I love this thread. Does the boxer use the same engine mounts as the Testarossa? If so- do you purchase oem ones or reproductions?
Same mounts and I don't buy them from Ferrari. Im looking forward to seeing the new 4 can exhaust system on it with 6 tips!
