Could someone <cough>...judge...<cough> give me a quick - real quick - rundown on the differences between the 3 models. I may get crucified for this, but I can't tell a difference between them. Then again, the only 365 I've ever seen (that I know of) is Judge's, and I don't exactly see many of the other models running around town, either.

There is a white 400i for sale in my neck of the woods, and what can I say - I'm curious.

Thanks to both of you who replied... Methinks I'll be making a stop by the lot sometime this week. What's the absolute worst that could happen - I come home with a 12-cyl Ferrari?!?!?!

...those seats might give you better support, to me, however, they are certainly not better looking.
I find the 365's (my car) and the early 400's the most beautiful cars. The body style without the spoilers in front, the beautiful tail line and the six tail lights.
An interior that still has a very classic feel and look to it. The carburated engine that sounds the best (...of course more maintenance, I know) and as far as the 365 is concerned - knock-off Daytona wheels..!

Also the 412 has wheels that take "normal tires" Everything else uses expensive metric tire sizes...which limit your tire choices.

However, the earlier wheels look much better in my opinion.

I don't like the 365 simply because of the 6 taillights. Too fussy in my opinion.

My favorite is the 400i manual.....

Also other 412 differences would be the clear turn signals up front, the painted front bumper area, the orange gauges.

I actually like the front spoiler on the 400/400i/412.

I hate the 412 for the rear trunkline...otherwise, that'd be my first choice.

Early 400's and 400i's have 15" wheels not metric.

I stand corrected. Thanks. What size are the 412 wheels in comparison with the late 400i wheels, vs the early 400i wheels?

Now...what about a rumor I heard that all 400s are non-U.S. cars? Is that the case?

None of the series (365 - 412) were originally homologated, they're all grey market cars. As long as you do your homework, nothing to worry about.

I think you need a bigger Ferrari emblem on the back of your 365...that one's not large enough.

So there was some truth to it. Interesting... At any rate, I wouldn't dare bring a non-CA car into the state that's not already 50-state approved, but if there's one for sale locally that has CA plates and such already on it, chances are it's safe.

That said, "buyer beware" still holds true.

    Thanks so much -

The two biggest differences in the 412 are the 340 hp vs. 310 hp and the ABS brakes. The 412 was the first Ferrari to have ABS, so you can wow the others at your local FCA event with that bit of trivia!

Here are most of the differences between the 412 and the 400i:

    1. Engine is 4.943 liters vs. 4.8 liters
    2. HP is 340 vs 310
    3. Compression ratio is 9.6 vs 8.8
    4. Two distributors vs one
    5. Top speed 250 kph (155 mph) vs. 240 kph (150 mph)
    6. 5 speed 0-60 mph 6.7 seconds vs. 6.9 seconds
    7. Front and rear tracks widened slightly
    8. Bumpers and rear valence panel painted body color vs. matte black
    9. Wider front spoiler to reduce lift
    10. Rear deck trailing edge about 1/2" higher for better aero
    11. Rear fog lights moved from bumper to below bumper position
    12. Wheels less recessed with simplified hub, still TRX 415 wheels on early 412 and then switched at some point to 7 1/2 X 16
    13. Electric seat adjustments added
    14. Dual a/c standard vs. optional
    15. Red instrument number vs. white
    16. Additional high frequency stereo speakers added on the dash
    17. ABS brakes
    18. Most front turn signals white lenses vs. orange and white

That's about all that I can think of! ;-)

You need to look for EPA, DOT and BAR paperwork then. Those cars are out there.

    Hi Ash,
Pretty nice to see all the activity in this forum isn't it?

I know #9 was stated by Ferrari, you have to admit they are good at marketing. Think about it, its a 4,000+ pound car. When flying down the expressway in our 365/400's the only thing lifting is our spirits and not the front end :)

I'd still love to know the official reason for the redesign of the 412 trunkline. They ruined the lines in my opinion, so hopefully it was for a good (to them anyway) reason.

Wow, learn sumpin' new everyday...i didn't know there
were any 365's with a 4 light config on the rear...
is your car really late in the series? One-off?? Or,
perhaps, did Ferrari phase in the 4 light config right
before they came out with the 400 ???

There are three cars that I know of, but I have reason to believe mine was the only one that came out that way, there are no indications that the configuration isn't original. PF has gone through their build records for me and said there wasn't anything documented on my car one way or another, but it was possible that they did it. Their words, not mine.
