I returned to Florida a few days ago and found my battery on its last legs. I keep a few cars and motorcycles in Florida and have them all on battery tenders over the summer. Still, I find that on average I need to replace batteries every 4 years.

I have a 2001 spider and have already replaced my battery twice, in both cases with an Interstate MTP-91.

I used to have an Interstate factory office nearby, but it closed, so I started calling places to see where I could get a replacement. A shop near my home quoted a price of $155. The lowest price I found was $143.

On my way to get the battery, I stopped by Costco to pick up some other stuff, so I looked through the batteries. I started thinking that I could possibly use a group 34 and flip it around.

Anyway, I decide against the 34 and continued looking at batteries that had the positive terminal on the right side. I get to the bottom shelf and, lo and behold, before my eyes is a battery that looks just like the MTP-91. It's an Interstate battery with generic labeling and the model number is 91. The positive terminal is on the right side, the vent is in the middle, and everything else looks the same, so I buy it and bring it home. I compare it to the MTP-91 and find it to be identical. Same dimensions, same weight, same appearance, same CCA, same warranty. I put it in the car and . . . voila.

    Here's the punchline: $72.

After Costco, I stopped by a Deka factory office to get a battery for my Harley. Cost: $101 (Deka is the OEM manufacturer for Harley, which charges $130 for the same battery). Why do I bring up Deka? Because I went to the source and still paid $101 for a tiny battery.

    Costco rules.

Great find, I too use the Interstate battery and have had great luck with them. I'll be looking at Costo myself next time around.

Thanks for the idea. Sounds even cheaper than Discount Battery (where I paid $85 for the battery that Harley wanted $125 for).

And there is a Costco not far from me.

Back in July I needed to replace my F430 battery. Checked with Ricambi and cost was $500+, also checked with Sams and Costco but did not have in stock. Finally, I found the exact replacement at Sears. Price - $137.60, no sale or discounts. Very satisfied.

Sometimes the Interstate batteries get low(even on a Battery Tender) so you have to put them on a charger using the AGM setting. Once charged up they're fine again. Worth checking before you buy another one.

Is the MTP-91 an AGM battery? Shouldn't we be using AGMs so as to avoid leakage damage? The battery is inside the passenger compartment so could be a real mess if there is a spill or leak.

No it isn't. I use an AGM because it is so much lighter but it really isn't necessary for most applications and has some drawbacks.

I was by Costco today and checked out the battery section. Looks like they have Ferrari listed in the reference guide, as a Group 34 size, but no part number. The only Group 34 battery they had at the Costco I went to today was this one pictured. I have to admit, I have not even taken a look at my battery yet so I don't know if this one would work in our cars.

I think the positive terminal is on the wrong side of the battery pictured. The original equipment was an FIAMM VR760. In the UK we call the battery an "096". Here are the specs for a Bosch S5:

34R, fairly certain the R means reversed terminals (+ and - swapped positions)

That's correct. I'm pretty sure a 34R will fit (it's a little taller), but it's hard to find. Sears sells them, but only in their cheapest model. I think you could probably make a 34 fit if you flip it around. There is some slack in the cables. However, the 91 battery at Costco is the same as the Interstate MTP-91 and definitely fits. The vent is even in the center. Forget about Costco's reference sheet. Buy the 91. You won't regret it.

Not that I need a new battery yet, but of course, they didn't have the 91 in stock or even listed at the Costco I was at.

I just replaced my 360 battery and got an MTP-91 from a local service station that is an Interstate battery dealer for $120 including 7.75% tax.
