I just bought my dream car, 2002 360 Spider F1 with 17K miles (Pozzi Blue). I am the second owner of the car after it went through the auctions ultimately purchasing it from a dealer in NC. The car is beautiful and in very good condition. However, upon delivery of the car I had problems with the F1 transmission. Largest issue was the fact the car wouldn't go into reverse when warmed up. After 3 weeks of irritating intermittent issues shifting from a stop, I sent the car back to the dealer for them to repair. Service manager said F1 system was fine and it was probably the brake light switch and swapped it out.

Got the car back Friday. Car still will not go into reverse when warmed up. Clutch is practically new 85%. The F1 operates flawlessly when moving forward. I just can't get this damn thing into Reverse. What is the problem? Below is a video of my issue. Sorry for the crappy camera work. I am like Fred Flintstone over here pushing my car with my foot out the door.

You know, I have never cycled through the F1 gears like I would with a 3 pedal manual with the motor off. I have just been getting in the car and driving.

So, I walked out to the garage, turned the key and it went into reverse fine when the motor was off. Cycled through all 6 gears, N, and R. Then I started it up and it went into reverse again. Hmmm. The car had been sitting for 3 hours but wasn't all the way cooled off. I'll have to report back. Thank you.

Just went for a great 20 mile drive. Pulled into my garage. Parked. Left the engine running and tried to go into Reverse. It worked!!! So I put it in N and turned the engine off. I cycled through the gears with the engine off 1,2,3,4,5,6, N and then nothing. It won't go into any gear now. Stuck in Neutral. SMH

    Congrats on the beautiful 360!

I think that's every first time owner's underlying fear. Finally get to the point where you get your dream car and some unknown issue pops up that takes a bit of the joy away. :( There are enough seasoned experts on this board to hopefully get you sorted out quickly. These cars are very reliable if driven regularly as I'm sure yours will be once this small hiccup is taken care of. Be sure to report back once you solve the issue.

I was on a roll with Dominick's help. However, the ThinkDiag2 that I bought doesn't work with my TCU. Says that I have the 1st TCU version. Ugh. I have not had any issues in the past couple of days with the F1 systems though.... I'll keep on it.

To make matters even more frustrating, for the second time I've gotten a CEL on the way to get the emissions inspected. P0442 Small Evap leak. Failed test. I reset the code, cycled through Ferraris recommendations and now the sensors are OK. SMH. Try again tomorrow.

I used to have this issue, noticed this was only when shifting from neutral to reverse.
To fix this, simply just make sure you’re in first gear then shift to reverse. Never had a problem since.
    Good luck

This has also been my experience. When the engine is warm, it doesn't like to go from N-R, but will go from 1-R just fine every time.

Thanks everyone. Passed the emmisions test, however the car can't connect to the State of Missouri's system. So the shop is going to get me a waiver because it passed the test with another test device.

Haven't had any issues with the F1/reverse for two days. Fingers crossed.

Had this issue as well, my 360 would sometimes not want to shift N to R. Once stopped, just shift to 1 and direct to R. Never had an issue after that. One of those, ‘it’s not a bug, it’s a feature’ things.

I have once experienced similar trouble.
For me, sometimes have trouble with shifting Nto1.

I am afraid this is due to F1 fluid cavitation.
After attaching cooling duct around F1 oil hose, this kind of trouble has improved.

Been there, done that. My solution was to adjust the PIS while the transaxle is HOT. For me, I just drive the car for about 30 miles, and let it idle. Plug in my diagnostic tool, do a relearn and readjustment of the PIS. Works great, shift with no problem since.

Unfortunately, my 360 appears to have the early TCU. My diagnostic tools says the TCU is version 1 and it can't read or write the PIS. Anyone with a V1 TCU know what affordable options there are for a scanner that can read V1 tcu/PIS settings? I bought the Thinkdiag2 which is supposed to be the same as the launch mini.

Jim .. came across this .. funny how ferrari says it is normal

    If the system automatically engages
2nd gear while shifting from “R” to
the 1st gear, this indicates that inter-
ference has occurred in 1st gear. Therefore,
this is not a malfunction as it
falls within the system operation. For
the same reason, in shifting from 1st
gear to “R”, the system will automatically
engage “N” in the event of
    interference.

Thanks everyone. I didn't change anything yet, but I haven't had the issue for the past few drives. I'll report back if anything changes.

Well I was locked out of Reverse again yesterday. Any attempt to put it into R from 1 or 2nd resulted in it beeping and going in N. Once it cooled down it was fine. I'm rather frustrated because I have the earlier TCU and I can't connect to it to see anything. I don't want to blindly replace parts with no method of diagnosis. I have a Thinkdiag 2 which is essentially a Launch Mini.

The only warning light that appeared on the dash was this one. And it only came on when HOLDING the F1 shift lever in "R" position in AUTO mode. When not in AUTO mode, holding the F1 Reverse Lever does not produce this warning light. 5 minutes after making this video the car went into Reverse just fine. Checked F1 fluid again. The dealer overfilled it so I adjusted the fluid level.

Upgrade the TCU ..only way not too blindly replace parts

So.many things it can be .. simple relearn , sensors , pressure issue .. i know we did timings but don't recall if it revealed anything (i can't remember)
