At the risk of asking here a FAQ: Is it true, that the engine of the 360 was the base of the current Maser Coupe? Did they manage to convert the engine from the back to the front?

I heard this once, but never found anything official about. At the time the 360 were in production, Ferrari was joined at the hip with Maserati and we know that the technology transfer happened at least in the Enzo/MC12 area, but did it also happen in the V8 section?

    And it's the 430.

Different heads, different induction, different cranks (flat in the 430, 90deg in the Maserati), rods and pistons.

    "flat in the 430"?

I don't think so. Flat is a boxer engine, like porsche and subaru. 430 and 360 are probably narrow/acute angled, not wide/flat/obtuse. I don't have the specs for the angle right now. Somebody else here probably knows.

he means flat plane crank; 180 deg. throws, the engine is of course a V (90 degree)...

F430, not 360. Same blocks and the same tranny as the 360.

it is not the 430 i am almost 100% certain that it has the same engine as the 360 producing the same 400hp, the trans is almost the same as the 360 and very similar to the 612.

Although I am not sure of this, wouldn't it make more sense that the Maser has the 430 engine? The 360 is 3.6 liters, the Maser and 430 are the same 4.3 liters. Yes there is a difference in power, but why would Ferrari even allow the same output for the stepsister. If in fact I am correct, the 430 has the Maser powerplant being that it was produced first.

    The 360 used a Dino-derived engine that is belt-driven. The F430 uses a Maserati-derived engine that is chain-driven.

Here is some info on Ferrari's V8 engines:

    Dino-Derived V8s:
    1962 2645 cc - 268SP
    1962 2459 cc - 248SP
    1974-1981 2927 cc - 308 GT4, 308 GTB/GTS, Mondial 8
    1974-1979 1990 cc - 208 GT4, 208 GTB/GTS
    1980-1986 1991 cc - 208 GTB/GTS, 208 Turbo
    1984-1985 2855 cc - "288" GTO
    1982-1984 2927 cc quattrovalvole - Mondial qv, 308 qv
    1985-1989 3185 cc - Mondial, 328
    1987-1988 2936 cc - F40
    1989-1995 3405 cc - Mondial t, 348
    1994-1999 3496 cc 5-valve - F355
    1999-2004 3586 cc F131 - 360

    Maserati-Derived V8s:
    2002-present 4244 cc - Maserati Coupe/Maserati Spyder/Maserati Quattroporte
    2005-present 4308 cc - F430

So the answer is no, the 360 engine is not the same as the engine in the Maserati.

As for the Enzo engine, it is also shared with the Maserati MC12 and the 599 GTB Fiorano and considered a Maserati-derived engine as well.

The 612 Scaglietti engine is still based on the older V12 in the 550 Maranello, 575M and F50.

I have more info on V12s, V6s and other engines if anyone is interested.

Same until 2008 when the new Maserati comes out with their new engine.

It uses the same block as the F430.

I was told by the saleman when I bought my 360 a couple of years ago that the engine on the Masserati was from the F430. It was just detuned to make less horsepower.
You can tell if you like because the 360 has a cam rubber belt and the F430 has a metal chain. The 360 engine will require 3 year or so belt replacement the F430 engine does not.

I only know what I was told.

Thanks, that pretty much sums it up. Also makes more sense given the identical volume.

    I don't follow, doesn't the Enzo significantly pre-date the MC12?

It is not the 360, and the engine in the 430 and Maseratis are not the same, although they do share the same block.

    You are all wrong ;)
Maserati does not use the Ferrari engine, Ferrari use the Maserati engine.

The 430 engine is based on the Maserati engine. Maser had it first, Ferrari spun some maranello magic with a flat crank and whacked it in their little car.

I believe the origins of this engine were an attempt by Maserati to make a V8 racing engine (Indy?). When Ferrari took control of the reigns at Maserati they found they had the basis of a great V8 already in-house.

The F360 engine was the last incarnation of the V8 originally in the Dino 308GT4

Isn't that a bit like splitting hairs? Sounds very much like the same engine to me, no?

Not at all Andreas. The crank layout especially makes a huge difference to the engines feel. Then there's the valve layout, ECU, intake and exhaust systems. The block has little effect on the engine behaviour. Its the moving parts that are important.

The first car to have this new generation of engine is the Maserati 2-doors back in 2002. Then came the Enzo, then the 430, and now the 599. The 360's engine has no relation to the Maserati engines.

If you visit the Ferrari factory and walk through the engine assembly area you will see Maserati V8's and Ferrari V8's moving along the line together. They are basically the same engine configured a bit differently for the two applications. A previous poster is exactly right. The genesis of the 430 engine is the Maserati engine which came first in the Mas coupe and Spyder, and later the QP. It represented a huge philosophical change for Ferrari which went to a chain driven rather than belt driven cam.

...Who designed and builds that "Maserati" engine?
