A while ago, the car became more difficult to start, and eventually, the ASR was on at start-up and would not start the car. I put the key in the 'on' position and could hear the left throttle body ticking like crazy. Does this sound like the typical ECU issue that can be repaired or something else?

If you've had an ECU repaired in the past, who did you go with?

    Thanks in advance.

It could be that, but it could also be five other things outside the ECU that makes it non-communicative with the other ECU.

Yeah, it's heading back to the service center for them to figure this out. I'm just pre-empting the worst-case scenario by picking an EUC repairer already.

I did not think they could even be repaired?

Repair is a big word. All they did was to check and replace some of the old capacitors which are well known to leak and go bad. If they find any other burnt power transistors or voltage regulators they change those. The cost is a few hundred dollars and it may not be worth it at all. If you ascertain that the ECU is bad, replacement is what is recommended. You also need someone to program the ECUs because they come unprogrammed. Trev360 and his regional assistants offer this service.

Evan, have the shop check for integrity of the inter-communication CAN bus between the 2 ECUs. Check to make sure all power and ground pins are fed to the ECU. The clicking noise on the left throttle body means something. Perhaps that TB is also bad.

easiest way to tell if its the ecu, try swapping them. If the TB where the possible bad ecu is plugged in starts doing the same thing that means its the ecu, if not, it is your TB.

Let's call it an ECU service if they're replacing blown PWMs or leaky caps. The dealer did some tests yesterday, and the signs suggest one of the ECUs requires attention. They have a local guy here in Australia that they use, but his lead time is extremely long, and their experience with him repairing a client's ECU out of a 550 has been suboptimal. I wondered if anyone on FChat has used another ECU service center/repairer, and I'm happy to ship it overseas if needed.

Or if the throttle body is causing blown components in the ECU, you will end up with two blown ECUs.

The clicking throttle body is symptomatic of the throttle body(s) drawing too much power from the ECU (I think max is 6A) and melting the H-bridge in the circuit.

This kind of damage may be repairable by resoldering the H-bridge connections.

The TB motor is likely drawing too much power because it has shorts.

I recommend rebuilding both TBs using donor parts from a Porsche Cayenne (and many other models) TB. About $300 in parts. (Bosch part 0 280 750 474)

I read your post and wondered which is the better option - rebuilding the TB with 0 280 750 parts or using the Cayenne TB natively with your TB adapter kit?

It's confirmed that the ECU is fried. They can't confirm whether it's caused by worn TB or by the ECU's age. Will deal with the TB once I get the car back from the dealer.
