Guys....I've searched, and most temp issues deal with the water/coolant on this board. I have a question surrounding the OIL.

I am a new 355 owner and have an operational question. I have refered to the owners manual and understand where the normal temps should be. My oil temp seems to wander a little.

Water temp on my car stays at a perfect 90oC (12o'clock position) all the time...flucuates a degree or two on either side, but VERY steady in ALL traffic conditions.

Oil temp flucuates quite a bit. If I let the car warm up on its own (at idle), the oil temp will come up to 100oC (12o'clock position) and stay there rock solid on its own...fans come on and off to maintain 100oC. HOWEVER, once I start driving the car, the oil temp will climb to the next mark on the dial (roughly 115-120oC). Temp WILL come down if I am driving at good speed and allowing air to help cool. If I am in traffic, the temp will sit at a steady 115oC, and not return to 100oC. It has never gone above, but seems too warm to me. It will only come back down to 95-100oC if I can get out on the freeway and really ram air through the car. Is this normal, and if not, what do you think it could be? I drive 99.9% of the time with the climate control system turned OFF.
Could it be an inaccuracy in the guage? Maybe reading 10oC too warm? Anyone else have ideas? Thanks fellas!! :)

The 355 road cars(not 355C)have a mechanical themostat that allows the oil to pass thru the cooler at a certain temp(owners manual states that temp)until that temp is reached it circulates thru the engine and oil tank. That thermostat has been known to malfunction. 230-240 F. ought to be a maxium in a 355 with the oil cooler sysytem working fine. If my conversion from C to F is correct you are hitting 275 F which does seem a little high under normal driving conditions, if you were on the track than 300 F could be reached. I would check the thermostat. Regards, Vern

Your conversion is a little off ;)

120oC is about 245oF. In your experience is this normal, or still too warm?

I'm with you....If america went metric then the world wouldn't have to buy our american hardware for aircraft and such :).

Here is a good conversion calculator:

Sorry on the error on my conversion I don't why we all don't use the metric system, anyway the more I think about it I would say for normal use you should be at the same temp as your coolant, around 200 F. If you are driving a little more sprited then maybe 245 is not hi. I might have the thermostat checked. Regards, Vern

Checking the thermostat isn't a bad idea but 355's are well known for running high oil temps. I have seen street driven 355's in hot weather with 300+ degree temps. It is why they have synthetic oil. It is also why we were told on hard driven cars or track driven cars to go to 10-60 oil. In 355s I have seen on the street idle oil pressures go low enough to make the warning light go on with 5-40.

Oil. My first sentence says oil. His original question was about oil.

And those temps are in F. Oil will combust before it gets to 300C.
