So I read that Johnny from Kalamazoo (PHROGS) will be selling his 355 after a plethora of service work including a bare metal respray (because of paint issues).

If you wait to time a paint job with an engine out service, what is a likely cost for the bare-metal respray for the whole car?

I pm'd Newman but hadn't heard back from him.

Thoughts? I'm not talking MACCO! ;)

Due to dramatically different labor costs and material costs regionally that will be hard to get a real number on the internet. You are lucky to be in an area where both should be on the low side. In Northern California for real quality but not Pebble Beach 20G's and that would be with our **** water base paint.

    Robb,

As a point of reference, Karosserie (one of the few authorized Ferrari body shops in the US) repainted the entire front clip (hood, fenders, bumper) of my Maserati GT for $3500.

And, they don't paint anything assembled. It was pulled apart in full, panels painted and reassembled - with new badges.

That price also included a new lower (below bumper) skirt and painting flat black on the nose. The quality of the work was the best I've seen in years.

I'd guess the complete car would cost $10-15K

EDIT - Robb, I just noticed the "Bare Metal" part. I don't think they stripped, but they may have since the hood was peppered up with lots of small chips.

At least $15k for quality work, most likely higher. The bigger issue is time -- for example, I asked Bradan out of curiosity and they said 4-6 mos.

Everyone is in the ballpark on this one 15K is average for a nice job, depending on bodywork and how much block sanding you would like. Last black porsche I did was 400 hours block sanding @ xx hr. That was 10 years ago

    :)

Just curious, what was material cost on that and what paint was used?

$15-20k for a high end respray. That is all doors off and apart, windows out etc.
The critical aspect of this with a Ferrari is getting the paint finishes right. All too often a paint guy will just use whatever he has on hand vs the correct OEM products...

You must have had access to some cheap illegal American labor. I'm in the same $20K neighborhood as Brian.

Paint was PPG and I'm told the cost was expensive. I don't have all the numbers but my paint shop did ok by me because I think he made zero profit on the job. The buffing/wetsanding guy alone cost him 1000$

I also got another quote from the local guy who does all the jobs for Ferrari Maserati Quebec and it was 10k.

Pretty much everything got dismantled on the car and painted individually: doors, hood, deck, mirrors, bumpers..

Like Brian mentioned it will vary around the country. We used to flat rate 348/355 paint jobs but after doing a few we realized the condition on the car plays a huge factor. Single stage original cars are very easy to strip down compared to a base coat/clear coat car thats been sprayed a handful of times.

Also you don't really know what your getting into until all the paint comes off. Keep in mind removing the rear glass is next to impossible and most guys will break it coming out adding a big expense. New windshield trim/gaskets are expensive if needed. And your going to want to have the 1/4 panels welded up to avoid cracking in the future. Removing the engine/radiators is a good idea to get a really clean product.

We only use Glasurit and Spies hecker products and maybe Wurth on a few things. Just the material bills on some paint jobs get up to 4-6k. With PPG material you might get away with 2-3k.

With that said in 2014 we painted 7 full F355/348s and most of the bills ranged from 12-18k. Who ever you end up using I really recommend using a restoration or hot rod shop to get a quality end product. Some of the best paint jobs I've seen came out of home garages believe it or not. It's all in the prep work.

To see whats involved these are two good threads to follow.

Glad someone pointed this out. I've seen some slick paint jobs come out of my buddies two car garage. My old car was one of them. It's amazing what a case of beer and a bag of burritos will get you.

Most of the great painter have drug issues... mainly because they can spend hours and hours on one panel prepping and stay focused on it till its prefect and it seems like 20 mins for them.. its sad that its like that but its true..

So true, detailers also. Takes someone with mental problems to look at a panel and rub it for hours...days..

All painters are divas also. We were joking around at the paint supply house between shop owners about our employees. One guy had a road runner ready to shoot that they worked on for about a year. He asked the painter about how long did he think he was going to take. The guy dropped the paint gun, walked to his car, and went home turning his phone off. He had to drive to the guys house and beg him to come back.

While I've seen some very talented garage guys, it's hard to match talent in a paint booth.

It was not fully dissasembled when they shot the primer but afterwards they removed everything to apply the color. You notice in the pics with the red color that the doors, bumpers are gone and rear deck lid is not attached, just resting on top.

In my experience a paint booth isnt any better. You still get trash in the paint, especially a well used booth, the seals are not the best.
If the shop takes care of the booth its one thing but no matter what I have still seen crap get in a paint booth and thats all its for is to keep that dirt dust and bugs out.

I don't need to bake my paint The stuff I have can be mixed to dry in 45 min

I can make one paint booth for my jobs and make it surgically clean.

Then I take it down when im done.

I am btw a trained auto body guy for anyone wondering and while I'm not shooting a ton of paint all the time it will still be great.
It does thought take me way longer than a shop with multiple people working on a car. Man hours cuts down on that turn around time.

I am still trying to find someone local to me that can take out my glass without destroying it.

Most shops have a specific line they use when it comes to paint, glasurit, ppg, sherwin williams, valspar. many different good paint lines out there.
Here in Michigan ill have to go way out of my way for glasurit. So "m thinking PPG for the 355.

One thing I'll mention as its somewhat related to this topic. My biggest dislike and most obvious problem with the majority of paint jobs I see is shrink back into heavy sanding scratches. Rough it in with 36 then drown it in primer before block sanding?

Must happen a lot in order to explain what I've seen after these things are out in the sun for a few weeks. I'm not a pro body guy but I don't think anything should be shot with the next coat of primer unless the last block sanding stage was 120 or finer. Just my opinion!

Johnny, I think Ferrari switched from Glasurit to PPG somewhere around 1997.
