Hello! I have recently purchased a 348 Spider as a restoration project, after being abandoned for 18 years. (I will open a topic with the entire restoration process).

The first problem I encountered was that the keys were lost and the steering wheel was locked. The quick and easy solution was to insert a drill bit into the lock.

What options do I have now? Is there a "compatible" lock to install (the same one that a friend told me about)?... Can the "guards" be changed?

(sorry for my English as a translator)

    Thank you all.

Seems a little drastic. Couldn't you have removed the lock and have a locksmith look at it? I see that Ferrari 348 key blanks are available and cheap on eBay, but now you've probably destroyed a perfectly good lock.

The 348/355 forum should give you a better chance of finding a solution. Some folks have used Fiat locks, but they have fewer key positions and the plugs need to be rewired. They may also be getting hard to find (and become expensive).

Here is one FerrariChatter's adventure with locks:

An Alfa Romeo lock may be a solution.

Wiring diagrams are available for the Coupe, but the Spider shouldn't be too different (apart from Window control). Whilst you're looking for a new lock, you could start and run the car by shorting out various pins on the lock electrical connector.

    Good luck with your project!

Thanks! Yes, it was very drastic but I urgently needed to unlock the steering wheel to move it from where it was... now I'm not too worried about this issue because it still needs a lot of work, but I want to have this resolved.

Now that you have proper ****ed it, break that steering lock, fit a push button start with hidden micro toggle kill switch and be done with it.

It would be the quickest way to get it going again.

I haven't seen anyone have too much luck replacing that ignition barrel from memory.

Remember an ignition switch has 4 positions, not just start. OFF, ACC (for powering the ABS), RUN (normal ignition power), START. You can wire the ACC and RUN wiring together without losing too much. I think there are maintenance procedures which require ACC.

Cheers man, you are correct, you will need to wire in a relay to make it all work, but it could be done I'm sure.

Wife's Prado has push button start, press button once to get ignition/accessories, press it again for it to start engine. Same button turns engine off. Shouldn't be too hard to work it out. Ferrari have put start/stop buttons in Ferraris since the 430.

F430's actually have an ignition key and a start button, Pap. However, the ignition key is only off/on. Same for the 458. I'm not sure when Ferrari switched to keyless. 488?
