Ok so my engine took a crap, how bad I do not know yet. So ballpark what does it cost to take it out and rebuild it via an indendent vs a Ferrari dealer.
Given there are more 355 and 360 engines out there then 348 engines would it make sense to go that route or is it even feasible. This all assumes I would keep the car.

Rebuilding a Ferrari engine is not that bad if you use non Ferrari parts. I.E. Carillo Rods, use CP or JE Pistons, etc. Some items you have to go genuine Ferrari but you can rebuild a Ferrari engine stronger and save a ton of money by using quality aftermarket components.

Brian Crall (Rifledriver) will know much more about this then I do.

    Kevin

Try to stick with rebuild...making a "franken-ferrari" with another motor means it will be forever yours...or sold at a huge discount.

Not so sure about that. True if he used a Chevy big block. Not neccesarily true if he uses a 355 or 360 motor. I would have paid an extra $5k for a 360 motor in my car.

I kind of dislike the "FrankenFerrari" name. It is so loosely used and is often truly describing a car that by performance/durability/etc standards is a better car.......

Would a Fiero or MR2 motor work? Kind of like a kit-car in reverse?

I agree. Every time I see a car for sale that has some story about what's in the engine bay, I lose interest fast. Especially a Ferrari, where the engine is the soul of the car.

As far as I'm concerned, all those Chevy-engined Jags and Porsche 356s running around with 912 engines are basically parts cars.

I would also like to know what has happened to that donk. All depends on what damage is done. Hard to gauge a rough price with out knowing. :)

You are the exception. On older Ferraris it is even a negative to have a different serial number motor than what it came with. I am not debating whether it is right or wrong to attempt "upgrading" with a 355 or 360 motor, it is just a fact, and the market pricing often reflects this.
