So can I use the 10w 40 high mileage in my car with out any problems?
If the car starts easily, and idles well after just a few seconds, then you are going to be just fine.
If you run up near redline, then yes, if you simply granny around town, no. You add more like 10% of a bottle to oil that already contains 900ppm of zinc. Or you can mix race oil with motor oil at 1qt race to 1 or 2 qts motor oil depending on how much (ppm) zinc in the race oil versus how much zinc in the motor oil. You should be shooting for 1200ppm of zinc. I've seen race oils with as little as 1500ppm and as much as 2200ppm of zinc, and seen motor oils with as as little as 800ppm or as much as 1100ppm. The 1200ppm target remains, how you get there is where the math comes in.
I contacted Red Line to inquire if I need to add ZDDP, here is what their reply: "Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, our 10W40 Motor Oil and all of our Motor Oils contain good levels of ZDDP, containing 1330ppm zinc and more importantly for flat tappet cam/lifter protection 1200ppm phosphorus. Our Motor Oils would contain substantial phosphorus levels for extremely good wear protection and additional shouldnt be necessary. "
Is there a good step by step oil change thread? I am due this month, and have nearly everything needed...still need to get a GOOD 12mm hex, and a strap filter wrench.
FYI, Mobil 1 0w40 and 15w50 has 1000ppm zinc and 1100ppm phosphorus. Would it still be worth adding anything at those levels? I'd rather be safe than sorry as I had one of my muscle cars chew up 4 lifters after around 30k miles recently, though I was not running synthetic so zinc and phosphorus levels were presumably lower.
What model do you have? Both the 348 and 355 are easy, I can send you a step by step for the 348. You need a 10mm socket (to remove the airbox), a 22mm wrench (7/8 will also work) to remove the drain plug under sump tank (back right corner when facing the front of the vehicle), a 12mm hex to remove the drain plug (mounted horizontally), and you will need to remove a tray underneath to get to the 12mm hex plug (mine is held in place with a combination of philips screws and 10mm bolts).
