348 Engine Oil - Mobile One 10W30 or Redline 10W40?

    I am planning to change my engine oil. I am planning to use either Mobile One 5w20 or 10w30; or Redline 10w40. I cannot find 10W40 for Mobile One. Any other suggestions? I only drive my 348 in Northern California.

    I use Mobil 1 0w-40. Flows better at start up and is a 40 weight oil when warm.

    I just changed my oil and used Mobil 1 10w30 and installed a new K&N air filter and oil filter. Car has great oil pressure and has maybe picked up a few ponies as well. I havent noticed any leaks.I would recommend it.

    +1. After a lot of research and over 10 years of Ferrari ownership, I agree Mobil 1 0W40 is what you should use. I use it in my 3.4 V8 and my V12. Factory spec is 10W40, 0W40 covers factory spec. Goodluck with whatever you choose.

    11 quarts about right, you may only is 10.5

    I have been filling mine up using litres (a quart is a tad smaller than a litre, 1 quart = .946 litre), and I've never used 11 litres - always 10-10.5 litres.

    I am NOT going to argue that there is a snit of difference between 3.8 cP and 3.9 cP.
    I AM going to argue that there is a BIG difference between 3.9 cP and 4.7 cP.

    So, in effect, at thigh temperatures and at high shear levels (that is when you are "getting it on") RedLine oil is thicker and protecting better. For regular street driving Redline 0W-30 is equal to Mobil 1 0W-40, for track use RedLine 5W-40 is ever so slightly thicker than Mobil 1 15W-50 oil.

    Most of this is a peculiar property of the diester base (RedLine) versus the PolyAlphaOlefin base (Mobil One). That property is that for the same viscosity, Diester based oils have greater density and fluids with greater density are harder to squish out of journal bearings.

    I run Redline 5w40; I feel that gives me the best combo of good flow at start up and decent protection when running the car hard.

    How long are you going to own your car? ;) And that case is 12 quarts, leaves you a little for topping off.

    Guys...What happened to that old argument about ZDDP in Mobil one? Was it resolved? Have they changed the formula?

    In SoCal I like Mobil 10-40 up to about late 2010 when it became NA. 10-30 is my substitute. If I was rich, I'd use the Redline 10-40.

    Mobil 1, and just about EVERYTHING else has much lower ZDDP that Ferrari engines like.
    So, if you want to run the living snot out of your engine, suggest you find an oil additive that is basically ZDDP. One such product is over at RedLine.

    Otherwise, use a racing oil with high ZDDP but do not forget to change it often as race oil has lower amounts of the stuff that protects while the car sits in the garage. 1/2 race oil, 1/2 motor oil is probably a good mix.

    Is the mobile 1 10w 40 high mileage that the mart sells ok , they did not have any other 40 weight oil. Ferrari recommends 10w 40 so is this stuff ok?

    00W-40 in standard configuration
    10W-40 in High Milage configuration
    05W-40 in Turbo Diesel Truck
    05W-40 in ESP Forumula M
    10W-40 in racing configuration

    Easy to find: Google "Mobil One" and click on oils.

    As to 0W, 5W, 10W and others. It turns out that to make a 0W-40 oil, one starts with a 0W base stock and then adds viscosity improvers until it has the 12.5-14 cSt viscosity at 100dC. To make a 5W-40 oil, one starts with a base stock of 5W and adds viscosity improveers until the oil has 12.5-14 cSt viscosity at 100dC. To make a 15W-40 oil, one needs only start with a 15W synthetic base oil--no viscoisty improvers needed it will ALREADY have the 12.5-14 centiStokes of viscosity at 100dC!

    Thus, for all intents and purposes (pertaining to Ferrari engines) choose the xxW starting number to be as high as you can still start your car easily. For those of us down here in Texas, a 15W-40 would be just perfect, those of you up in Minnesota, 0W-40 is the better choise.

    Also note: for any rae track use, you should IGNORE the xxW-yy spec and use an oil with an HTHS greater than or equal to 4.2 centiPoise. You will find that diester oils (RedLine)have a better HTHS-to-weigth correspondance than the PAO (polyalephaolefin) based oils (like Mobil One and most others). In fact, the correspondance is so good, one can almost determine the diester content by comparing the two viscosities.
