So my engine abruptly "went" while driving on the Garden State Parkway a couple of weeks ago. Ironically, I just had my oil changed (by an authorized Ferrari dealer) as it had been a year plus a couple of days after my last major service. ($10K was spent in 2020 on that because as you know "while the engine's out..."
So I'm looking at another major repair/rebuild project for my 348.
So a question to my Ferrari Brothers... Should I have it repaired or should I sell it on "BAT as is"...
I'm "pissed" at the car as I did everything by the book yet the engine still let go.

I'm waiting on a complete diagnosis... A quick look at the belt showed that it was stripped of its teeth. I'm thinking the valves "made love" with the pistons...

That really does not mean very much yet. What is the initial cause of the engine failure such that the belt teeth were stripped? Something froze up? How did it happen anyway? You were driving and BANG? You parked your car after a hot run, came back and turned the key and BANG? You missed a shift ?

I wouldn't be "pissed" at the car, its not the car's fault but rather something which wasn't taken care of by the people you're paying to maintain it.

    What does "Let go" mean.
What were you doing when it "let go", pulling hard, idling at the traffic lights, cold start, cruising? A bit more detail would be helpful.
First course of action would be to take it back to the last person who worked on it. It seems someone may well be liable to put it right.

Who has the vehicle now.? The shop that did the major, or someone else?

If the belt was stripped of the teeth sounds like a cam might have seized. Was oil pressure ok?

That blows for sure. No pun intended. I would be talking to the shop that did your major... they should warranty the work for two years if auth dealer right? If Indy, normally one year?

This is an example of why the "mono-belt" was a bad idea IMO...

The major was warranted for a year from a very reputable shop in French Town, NJ. It was but two days out of warranty. The shops warranty was written by a craft-full attorney. I’m not litigious but that will change if negligence is discovered by the certified Ferrari mechanic I trust.

It's puzzling that you can't seem to find words to describe what "the engine blew" means

Are you blaming the car??? The potential cause is staring you right in the face.

I don't get the blame the guy who did the major stuff. As the OP said, it was a year ago. Things break. It's not always someones fault. Before you convict someone you need some evidence. Pull it apart and see what you find. If a fault points to the service, then discuss it with the shop that did it. If the warranty is past the OP might still get a better deal to fix it.

It's likely not time dependent but mileage dependent.

How many miles since the last major a year ago?

I agree with John stripped teeth sounds like something seized. Definitely not a belt breaking failure.

Goes to show how strong this belts actually are to strip teeth from pullies.

One thing that does concern me is that Dan said he just had the oil changed. If something did seize you have to think about lubrication. Not casting stones here, but maybe waving a yellow flag.

OP said the oil pressure was normal at the time.......

I wonder if it was a fence failure on the belt drive sprocket?
