Replaced the OEM plastic bottle with a bag type I got from Superformance. The pump has two connectors whereas the original wiring has 3 wires, none of which appear to be a ground (two blacks and a grey/red). Anyone know what these wires are? Why would you need 3 wires for a simple DC motor? And why is there no ground?
(Thinking perhaps the circuit is grounded through the wiper motor circuit so that when you activate the washer the wipers come on? .. but that would still call for only 2 wires ..)

the two blacks are the ground (one for the pump and the other to the parking / direction indicator) and the grey/red is the 12v to the pump

You will have to connect the two blacks into one connector at the washer pump using an adapter.

Your owners manual wiring diagram will show these connections.

You should update your profile for the year of your 308.

There has to be a ground. No electrical circuit can work without one. One of the 3 wires must be a ground. Here's what I'd do:

First, test all 3 wires for continuity between the wire and the chassis (or battery negative post if convenient). Whichever one shows continuity is the ground connection. You'll need a multimeter of course.

Second, test the other two wires for voltage when the washer switch is activated. The voltage (12V nominal) should be present only when the switch is on. That's the one you should use to connect to the new pump.

The third wire would not be needed and should be taped off and protected.

edit: Or you could just take the advice from lm2504me above :)

Thanks guys, I did try the multimeter thing and found no ground initially, set to open/closed. When I set it to 100 ohms I found one of the black wires was the ground (circa 2 ohms so perhaps not the greatest ground), the other was not grounded. But it seems this second black wire grounds through the first one so mystery solved.

That about wraps up the work on the front half of the car. Now to finish up the noisy end.

As for the year, it's an 82 but there's not much 308 left. It's mostly a 355 with 288 bodywork now.
