I have been looking at my Alfa Montreal regards "Correct" types of Hose Clamps to be used in case someone checks them out at a Concours and deems them wrong. On the Alfa, also Italian and from 1974, it is called up as Roma-Blok. Is that the same for Ferrari or...? Someone with experience showing their car might be able to answer this. Having gone through part of the Engine Compartment refurbishing the Plenum and changing some Hoses as well, the question came up. Thanks!

This is a subject that interests me also. There seems to be little information on what I would call "Judging Standards". Elsewhere I have posted a question about metal finishes.

We do not judge for correct hose clamps on 308/328. Earlier cars with Cheyney clamps and early Italian band clamps are judged.

Too many variations even on the same model and year and no one has even attempted to narrow it down. We have a basic philosophy that if we cannot point to a particular car in a particular year in a particular application and say exactly what it had we just don't do it. It should have a general original looking appearance. If it draws attention because it is so different it may at the discretion of the judge be a deduction. Ferrari was not a cookie cutter manufacturer. It would be ridiculous and disingenuous to judge as if they were.

Thank you for the clarification. I was hoping that amongst the many collectors and enthusiasts someone may have unearthed an unmolested, original carbureted car and would share photos.
Finishes fade, hoses and hose clamps get replaced frequently it would be nice to have an idea regarding the correct choices.

I have such photos and it would be really easy if Ferrari built them all the same.

Most of the Hose Clamps in the day were finished with either a Zinc finish or a Cadmium finish, Yellow or Silver. Nowadays a lot of us have been using the Stainless Steel type (myself included) and they have the Bright band with slots rather than the older band with the raised section for the screw to index to. They are noticeably different in appearance so I thought it was a question worth asking. Also because of my latest experience trying to find a 22.0mm ID Black Cloth Braided Hose. Someone mentioned that they had been penalized for not having the Black Cloth Braid on their hose and points were taken off. It is on a separate thread, I think on Plenum Restoration / Red Wrinkle Finish. Which brings up another question - what is the "correct" Red Wrinkle Finish? I used VHT Wrinkle Red, there was mention of a number of other finishes people have used....

Back to the "Correct type" of Clamp. Please keep in mind that the Old Style used to have a Flat Screwdriver Head. These are difficult to get tight and lead to hoses leaking. Some Old Style Clamps had a Hex Head as well so you could get a socket on it, but not many. Most of the New Style Clamps come with a Hex Head that allows for a Phillips Screwdriver as well, these allow you to tighten them up better. I much prefer this type as I have never found them to leak after tightening even with a 1/4" Drive Socket.

His point is that Ferrari used multiple different types of hose clamps on 308s, even within the same model/year, so there is NO reference point.

To be specific, would it be acceptable to use (Triton?) Stainless Steel Hose Clamps on a 308 QV?

If someone possesses photos of original pieces which are known to be correct that is a starting or reference point. Agreed there are other variations.

I believe this is a correct type of clamp for early 308s. It is galvanized, not stainless, with the edges rolled slightly to avoid digging into the rubber hose.
The hex drive is slotted with a 7mm Hex. These are different from what I would call an American style clamp. The drive housing on this one is corroded so I can not read a name.

I have a box full of original clamps. Most of that style were supplied by Norma but they were not the only one. Norma and Zebra both still make a clamp much like that one but in SS. I think the Zebra are better quality. There were different styles of clamps used however even on the same car. The brake vacuum hose used a different clamp, the breather and air injection also used different clamps but over the entire run of 308/328 it evolved.

IAC/PFA has no "Correct/Incorrect clamps it is the judges discretion. As always do your homework and be prepared to defend your decisions. A few years ago we won the National Preservation Award with the TR. I had a bag full of radiator caps. I held it up and showed the judges and asked which they preferred. You are representing your car...represent it, don't just stand there.

    LOL!

Brian your input is priceless and deeply appreciated. Yes we will show the car and the judges opinion matters but I am sure we share the desire to just get it right...period. It seems to me that most replacement clamps are Stainless regardless of who made them, which I believe would be incorrect.

Norma makes clamps in different qualities of the same design to meet price points. I have never tried and my suppliers only carry SS but it may be possible to still get galvanized clamps from them.

Has anyone ever found a source of these tiny worm-drive clips which are used in a couple of places on the 328 such as LH side of plenum to oil/air separator? The band is only 5mm wide. Hose dia 10mm.
I never managed to find any so had to use the more common type of C-shaped clip with a screw. No points deducted though.

A couple of years ago, I have located some of those miniature 5mm wide clamps, which are used on very small diameter hoses - 7-11mm and 11-19mm.

Apparently, they were originally made by Norma, intended primarily for use on some farm equipment in European markets.

I had to buy a bunch of them, at a ridiculous price, and import them from Germany to the US through a distributor, since they were not sold at retail in this country.

So, if anyone is interested, I'd be willing to sell some in small quantities, to recover some of my investment. Price would be US$5.00 each, plus shipping.

Original hose clamps, cleaned then cadmium plated (not gold zinc) from a 1978 308 GTS USA carb model. these clamps were primarily on the fuel system (gas tanks, carbs and perhaps fuel pump hoses, and the larger ones were on the oil vapor hoses on the driver's side of the engine if I remember correctly.

    Clamps were recently sold.

Those look like correct pieces to me. I have been told by several plating companies that cadmium has been outlawed by the EPA?
I have also learned that there are several different MIL spec plating thicknesses for these coatings.

More pictures from the archives before rebuild. (1978 308 GTS USA carb version)

Note very specific clamps on large diameter fuel filler pipe. At the end of the band, on the right side in the picture, there is a "T" shaped tab on the end that fits into a slot. It is right under the screw head.

Also front coolant lines have a band clamp securing both the pipes, as well as a rubber sleeve on the end of the long pipe. The rubbersleeves were moved a bit forward later in the rebuild.

Cad isn't outlawed. It is even still available in California. The entire plating industry is under greater and greater enviro pressure and more requirements. It's why it has gotten so expensive. Lots being done across the border and why some OE "Chrome" wheels are really powder coat. It can all be done here but it will one day all be a memory.

It really can be an enviro nightmare. Talked to a shop owner and he was informed by his fire district that if he ever had a fire the department would only respond to prevent it from spreading and they would let his operation burn down. Cyanide in one room in double containment and sulphuric in another room in double containment.
If you flood with water they'll mix and you'll have a neighborhood full of cyanide gas. Then there are the heavy metals.

Almost no one is getting new business permits for plating. As the old places go...they're gone.

The second photo shows a clamp on the heater hose with a blue coated mechanism I believe was added later. The hose appears to be smooth as opposed to cloth texture.

When I read this, I'm really glad, that I have a huge plating company here in third family generation, which was just taken over by the young grandson.
They even have cheap flat rates for small quantities of classic car parts. I often order yellow zinc, which is a good alternative for cad, I think.

    Best Regards
    Martin
