My fuel gauge was operating erratically so I pulled the fuel level sending unit out of the gas tank to check it over. The resistance reading seems to proper for the first quarter distance (from full) of float travel then reads open the rest of the way (to empty). The low level switch works OK. Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these or know where I can get it rebuilt?

There's a wiper that rubs on (as I recall) coiled wire to provide the varying resistance. Try getting in there and cleaning those contact surfaces.

The plastic covering over the resistor wire is very flimsy, and glued together. Be careful in there. FYI, the resistance values I measured on an old one were

    8/8 15Ω
    7/8 30Ω
    3/4 57Ω
    5/8 90Ω
    1/2 123Ω
    3/8 162Ω
    1/4 209Ω
    1/8 256Ω
    0 303Ω
And the red light shorts at the 1/8 tank level
    Not very accurate.

What is the procedure to remove / replace the fuel sending unit on a 328? Do you have to remove the left gas tank?

    thanks,
    Paul

Isn't a new one a Fiat unit for like $60.00?

Give 'search' a try. There is a thread here somewhere. I think it was in reference to replacing the rubber seal on top.

It is just 4 small bolts that hold it in. IIRC there was some 'contortion' necessary to get it in/out.

    Memory going .... Sorry.

Do not have to remove the tank. Look near where the filler neck goes into the tank. Right near that you will see a circular retaining ring and a bunch of fasteners. Thats the sending unit, Remove the fasteners and pull out the unit.

Have you actually pulled one out?

Others say the tank had to come out. Maybe they missed a trick somewhere.

nope, the tank stays in. I did it a couple of weeks ago to "adjust" my gauge reading by bending the arm a little bit. As Meister wrote remove the fasteners and pull the unit. Than turning it to find the correct position so you can pull it out completely.

    Unfortunately no pics.

Actually my question, now that you mention it, was about a 308.

    Thanx for the info. :)

My top gasket is in sad shape and needs to be changed out.

So, to answer my own question, Yes, you can remove the sending unit without removing the gas tank. The procedure is to remove the coils, unbolt the sending unit, then lift/turn the unit to remove it from the tank. I just did it. Took about 1/2 hour.

Yup! I replaced mine after the car had sat for nearly 10 years. They can rot away leaving rust in your fuel tank. And since there is no filter before the pump it'll clog it righ up and seize. That's what happened to my old one anyways.

Anyone tried a rebuilding service like these guys?

    Rebuilt Fuel Sending Unit Specialist

I understand an original replacement is tough to find and other units (Fiat, etc.) need to be modified to fit.

The only modification that has to be made is to the fiat one is to trim the rod that holds the float as its a bit too long. Takes all of 5 min. I replaced it in my old car about 4 years ago now. Never had an issue.

He's a photo of my old one when I removed it and what it left in the fuel tank.
Again the car sat for about 10 years with out being started or even moved.

Yes. As others have mentioned tank can stay in, just a little fiddling and it will come out. FWIW I bought a universal tank sender from www.summitracing.com transferred over the mounting ring from the OEM one to the universal sender and put it back in. At the time it was a great $ alternative tot he ferrari specific part.

Here is a pix of the old unit and the universal unit. Takes about a 1/2 hr to measure /cut/ bend/adjust to make the new unit the "same" as the old. FWIW.
