I sometimes need to spray my accessory belts to quiet them down, even though a warm-up also works. They are a bit hard when cold, kind of like a flat-spot.

Just wondering if it's acceptable to also spray the cam belts to prevent hardening. Mine are new, just want to keep them supple. Any risk here, maybe to the cam gears, etc....?

I wouldn't recommend it. You don't want to chance it slipping in anyway, form or fashion.

No....cam belts have teeth and will (hopefully) not slip. So NEVER EVER spray this stuff on them.

I figured as much. I just thought it would be nice to keep them supple, but
slippage would NOT be good, agreed!

    Thanks,

Either tension your belts or put new drive belts on your car. Needing belt dressing means something is wrong.

Actually, the belt dressing you find here is for rubber type drive belts......our belts are a harder compound, more like plastic, so they will not absorb the compound......

Any 'quieting' is the result of it acting on the pulley surfaces.

Agree, that any treatment on the toothed timing belts is a bad idea.
They actually COUNT on the friction of the belt and gear surface to perform properly......

If you have one 'sqealing ' it is most likely worn and should be replaced...they can be worn and hardly visible to the eye, again based upon the hardness of the compound.....the running surface gets 'cupped' over time.

I actually put some belt dressing on my cam belts at some point last summer (2004). As I was troubleshooting what turned out to be a squeaking alt/h2o belt.

I sprayed some belt dressing on the flat side of the cam belt thinking it was slipping on the tennsioner bearing....

I've been drving with those belts from 8/2004 (wisconsin = 20 times a year) and nothing has happened. Just lucky I guess.

I didn't really plan to do it, it was just a side effect of something else I was doing. Would I recomend it, no.

I had planned on chaning the belts and tennsioners over this winter anyway as I had also re-installed the old tennsioner bearings as I thought I had recieved some bad new ones (bearings).

Talk about living on borrowed time..and I didn't win the $320M lottery. Guess I'm lucky in other ways.

One of my drive belts makes a bit of noise--like a repeated tic corresponding w/ rpms--only when cold. They warm up quickly and the noise goes away.
    The belts are recently fitted.

    Anybody else experience this?
