I've driven one GTS and 4 GTBs, including one I bought last weekend and have driven ~300 miles since. I like it enough to be looking at upgrading to one with a few more options and that opens up again GTS and AF vs non.

Based on the one GTS I drove it sounded like with the top up, and rear glass either up or down, that the engine was a bit more "distant" both with core engine and turbo noise. Passenger at the time agreed.

Might it just have been that one? I've driven 4 458s and each was a bit different across different dimensions including sound but I've been assuming 296, SF90, F8, 812 are all much more consistent.

Curious for those with more experience:

    1) Is the 296 GTS a bit more muted sound wise in the cabin with the top up? Or does anyone think it sounds even louder or in some way better?

    2) Any delta with the rear window down? (There did seem to be on 458 and 488).

I don't seek convertibles but if it sounds better would consider it especially since it would potentially open up ordering custom config new.

    Thanks!

I drove a GTB and GTS back to back and found the GTS to be louder, even with to and rear window up. YMMV

I have differing results. I had a GTS demo as a loaner for a month. It was nowhere near as loud inside the cabin as my GTB. So drastic I made my SA drive them both and he was blown away.

While I can see the convertible area near the bulkhead changing the sound and resonance, I thought I read that the GTS used a different “hot tube” configuration, or didn’t have one.

Same, time in both GTB and GTS and I find the GTB louder in cabin (top & windows up)

    Thanks all!

Perhaps 296 are as different as 458s were from machine to machine.

That does give me pause buying a new 296 GTS in order to get my own spec though since I wouldn't know the sound profile until it arrives.

100% agree. The GTS not only sounds quieter but the tone is different too, the GTS inside sounds more true to how the car sounds outside, while the GTB has a different tone inside (that I prefer). That is indeed due to the different hot tube designs, the GTB hot tube exits right behind the driver's head while the GTS hot tube is optimized to bring the most sound while the roof is open.

This might be minor to some but it's one of the main reasons I'm sticking to a GTB, the exhaust note inside the cabin is simply one of the best right now. I suspect it'll be the same for most models moving forward.

Funny thing is I had the same feeling with my F8 spider. The F8 GTB sounded much better than the spider with the top up or down and everything in between. It’s such a shame what the GPF filter has done to our cars.
