I'm learning about the 288 GTO and am doing more reading. How many were manufactured? Were any made in Black? It was around 400HP? TIA!
i think no black GTO by the factory but a french one is black. 272 made. None in black from the factory. 754 HP. OK, kidding. 400 HP but more impressive is 366 ft-lbs of torque at 3800 rpm in a car that only weighs 2550 lbs. Basic stats: http://www.ferrariusa.com/GTO/index.asp
There were 272 GTO's built. After that one extra GTO was built. The factory produced one in black for the Sultan during production. The interior color came in at least four versions: basic black, a few with red cloth inserts on the dash and seats. The cloth was unique in that it went from light to darker red from the front to the back of the seat and also the top to the bottom of the seat. Also red leather replaced the cloth on some cars and finally a tan interior-not common. These 288's are undervalued; due to their similar appearance to a 308 model... horse fan
I made a thread about it earlier swisscarsightings.com doesn't let you link directly to pictures. This is the link you want. http://www.swisscarsightings.com/ferraridreamdays2005.html It is a real 288 GTO, all were originally red, this one was repainted black. Glorious car~!
I respectfully disagree. Only 272, not 273 units were made. I maintain a very detailed 288 GTO registry since 1983 (when I saw the first prototype, check out thread "Ferrari Factory 25 Years Ago" and you'll find pix of that prototype, still looking like a 308) and have detailed history of each individual car including all serial numbers. Part of that information I also published in the book "Ferrarissima", issue #20 of 1995. Two - not four - different interior versions were available. Black and black with red inserts. No red leather and no tan interior at all. No 288 GTO was ever painted black originally, at the factory. Cars have been repainted later, however, by and for private individuals. Silver grey metallic (two for a Mexican), a few yellow ones, etc. No, the factory never prodcued a black one for the Sultan of Brunei. BTW, it was his brother Prince Jeffrey who collected special cars, not the Sultan itself. Factory options included only air conditioning and power windows. Nothing else. Check out the various threads on www.ferrarichat.com and you'll find much more information. Marcel Massini
Thx guys! Guess it'd be a bit of a sin to repaint one if u got your hands on one. The swiss black repaint with tan custom interior looked awesome at the links above tho.
i now know who owns this car, the sultan gave it to one of his lawyers who recentley died and a business associate of ours bought it and two original shelby gt500's one convertible and one coupe both with approx. 500 km's on them, he WILL NOT SELL THE CARS i've tried NUMEROUS times, he has them completley dissasembled and the interiors vacum sealed. damn it.
Diassembled? Man thats just nuts! These cars should be shown and enjoyed! Does the 288 have a red stripe?
Did the shelbys come from Brunei too? Is the GTO completely dissasemled and vacum sealed? I assume it is still RHD? And i assume its now in Canada? (Info for my database) Chris
from what andre(new owner) told me is the sultan gave them to one of his canadian lawyers, who had them sitting in his garage, he died and andre bought all three off of his wife, i'm not sure if the mustangs were originally from the sultan though.
Thank you Marcel, for your detailed reply with corrections! Can you comment on the 288 GTO that Niki Lauda obtained; regarding where it was in the '272' production number? Much good info is to be found when you search... horse ffan
Ferrari yellow 288 GTO Racing seat belts (4 mountings) - Fire extinguisher equipment - Numberplate MO 846288 (Modena) - Mileage 9616 km (run by Ferrari test drivers only) - The car is full original and its conditions are as for collectorsInfos from Ferrari:272 Ferrari GTO have been produced over the years, but this GTO is not included in that number, therefore it's an unique specimen! After the 272 cars were built and sold, Ferrari still had 4 prototypes; 2 were completely destroyed during safety crash tests, 1 was disassembled and sold as spare parts to a customer who had his car burned out, the last is this one and it is very likely to be the very first 288 GTO Ferrari ever made! This car, after long negotiations, has been totally restored by Ferrari and sold to a dealer in Modena for a very important customer.
