Hi Sam. I did try the heat gun thing but I was afraid of over-cooking it. For smaller objects the oven would do nicely however If you do have a source of consistent high heat like a log burner, this worked the best for me. Im very pleased with the results. These are the intake cam covers I never posted up before and you can also see the breather pipe to the right. I do have a wrinkle / textured finish powder coat but I think this actually looks better.

Managed to make a start on the engine bay. My finish on the air ducts was in a tatty state so I decided to remove all of the soft coating they used. Any idea what this coating was?

My flexi ducts were also looking a bit tired so decided to dye them black instead of the incipid beige colour. I know not original but I think it looks bettter

I agree with you on the color change of the flexi ducts. I've always hated that biege color in an otherwise cool looking engine bay.

    What a great thread!

    Good day wda,

I ended up using an industrial heat shrink gun, as it was what I had on hand... and puts out a fair amount of heat. I was also concerned about the localized heat, but simply took my time and ensured that I "spread" the heat around and never stayed in one spot too long. Secondly, I watched how the wrinkle paint reacted and when it just started to transform I simply moved the heat away. All in all it was not overly difficult and the results were as good as factory.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Hi Sam - I did try that method on my first chain cover as an experiment with success. I think the key is making sure you start the heat process when the paint is at a certain state. It states leave for 2 hours before applying the heat, but I found an hour to be about right, at 16 degrees.

Engine bay looking much better now. I just need to decide what to do with the air ducts.

I thought I'd try and be little quirky and left the plate exposed, lacquered after.

Well in the end, after trying to find something suitable for the air ducts I went for wrinkle, insitu and finished with the heat gun. I think it looks okay.

That looks awesome, I always wondered why they were silver, this thread has been a great help as mine is going to go through the same resto.

I think they were only silver on the early cars, maybe even only the 365's (standing waiting to be corrected!)

The original finish is like a seam sealer type material, however mine was peeling in areas and trying to match it was not an option.

    There you go, stood corrected!

Well my first disaster of the restoration. I wanted to change the small £12 inner shaft seal on the water pump. Stripped it down (Photo 1) and then managed to knock the casing off the bench smashing the bearing housing! £££££'s :(

Ouch!!! that looks expensive. Lets hope the case is still available. I had to replace the water pump front cover & had to wait a few years for Maranello to remake them.

Totally my fault, so I can't blame the car for that one! I might see if a specialist welder will have a look at it, but Im not sure Im comfortable knowing where it sits within the engine.

Picked up my remaining parts this morning. Have to say there isn't much 'meat' on the new tensioners, unless its a new improved material. There's about 50% more thickness on the original ones!

Not much progress the car itself as to help avoid any more 'dropping' incidents I knocked up better and more robust workbench. Just need to hard wire the electrics

Pretty much everything here now to complete my engine rebuild.

This arrived with my oil pump cover, they were either feeling sorry for me or pleased to get rid of it!

Made a start on changing over the timing tensioners / guides in the cover. The new ones are quite honestly rubbish. The bush the hinge pin goes through was all burred on the end so I thought I'd swap the bush over from the old one to find it had a different o/d :( Managed to get it through the new one eventually but poor quality really

    Image Unavailable, Please Login .

Back to the air ducts, the one behind the battery tray had completely disintegrated so replaced with a plastic flexi. You can't see it in behind there anyway.
