    Hi all,

Just curious: how much are 250 SWBs trading hands for these days? Over $1,000,000?

    Cheers!

I would say about double that number; even more for aluminum bodied cars.

This one was sold last year at the Amelia Island Auction. The results are on www.rmauctions.com

1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Alloy Berlinetta Comp $2,750,000

Does anyone know if there was a GT and regular version of the SWB? That would certianly effect the value. I got a chance to see this one upclose..It was really amazing.

The 250 GT SWB came in two major guises the "Lusso" spec. cars looked like any other but didnt have the uprated engine or alloy bodywork and would be worth perhaps $1 - $2 million. And there are quite a lot of these floating about.
The Comp. 60 & 61 had all of the go faster bits and pieces incl. alloy body & high revving/ high power engines. Perhaps $2.5 - $5 million for the right car. There where perhaps no more than 40 - 50 Comp. cars built

As with any Ferrari though there are so many strange variations however like
Lusso's with aluminium bodywork or cars with different spec. engines. There were also specials like the Breadvan, Bertone, 250GTO proto. and more
So not an easy question but I hope an allright answer

    Cheers
    Tim

Tim - FWIW, Cavallino shows that 90 steel cars and 75 aluminum cars were built. FML shows a total of 167, with no breakdown. You are, of course, correct about the multiple variations, which makes any definitive answer just about impossible.

I believe a steel body 250 SWB was just purchased by a dealer/broker for $2.35M and sold on to a customer at $2.5M. The car did have a factory outside filler. In case the car didn't move, I will not disclose the VIN.

according to the latest Cavallino steel models range from $1.7M to $2.2M and the aluminum competition cars $2.7M to $3.9M. of course if the Rob Walker/Sterling Moss car ever came up for sale who knows. tongascrew george

I believe the Rob Walker/Moss car has been crashed so many times there's very little original panelwork left. Probbly won't affect value of course.

So if I understand correctly, the Lusso and the 250 GT SWB competition cars look basically the same on the outside - shape wise, at least - but the former is steel bodied and has a less powerful engine, while the latter is aluminum-bodied and meant for racing, with upgraded engine, etc.?

    Cheers!

You could argue hat the California SWB was based on the same or at least very similar chassis. However the 250 GT SWB were all Coupes, AFAIK
Also I think it is likely that the value of good SWB's will increase perhaps even double in the longer term.
    By good either
    A - good racing history
    B - very original

And hey if you could find one with both why couldnt they fetch $5 million ++++

A close friend of mine with a great steel body SWB with no racing history very recently turned down a real world offer of $3mil. for the car. This supports, again, my thory that the good cars trade privately for much more money than people would think.
