My 1986 Testarossa turns 25 years old soon. I'd like to get the Classic Car plates for it. Does anyone know how the program works? Do you no longer get the car inspected? Any other benefits? Does anyone else have Antique or Classic Car plates on their older Ferraris? What is the difference in the Classic Car plates and in original 25 year old license plates? Do you have to have front and rear plates if you get Classic or Antique plates?

My grandfather has a 1964 Chevy Impala SS that has the antique plates on it. I will see him either tomorrow or Monday. I'm sure he can help you. If it helps any, it only has a rear plate.

They last 5 years and require no annual safety inspection ...technically it's a "to and from, show and display" but it's not enforced that way....you can sometimes get pulled, over the inspection sticker missing, before they realize what they have...

And the Texas Antique tag has a FORD on it....food for thought on a Ferrari.....:D :D

They have a Classic Car one too....

They would disallow my Ferrari Art Car over the "advertising", reading the info posted above.

You can buy original plates to match the year of manufacture if you don't like the antique Ford look. I found a nice pair of '67 black on white plates on eBay only to learn at registration that they only required one plate.

Here's one site that I found useful:
    http://www.turnerplates.com/Texas%20YOM%20Law.html

Show up at your county registration office with the plate and away you go with a multi-year registration sticker. After that, inspections no longer required. For some reason, I was issued a 3 year sticker instead of the 5 year I expected, but it's absolutely worth it regardless.

Big difference in "classic" and "antique" plates in TX.

Classic plates must be originals from the year of the car's manufacture, and there's a cutoff year because the transition was made at sometime during the '70s from new embossed plates yearly to those that required a new sticker to be placed on the same plates every year.

Classic plates don't limit driving in any way and the car is exempt from emissions inspections, per the 25-year rule.

Antique plates are as Tillman describes them.

I had a set of original 1964 plates on the 330 2+2. The 308 is over 25 yrs. old, but by 1983 the sticker rule was in effect so I got vanity plates for it instead.

Now, the sticker rule is gone and all cars here save the antique-plated must have the registration updated and pass inspection every year, with 25 year and older cars exempt from emission inspection. No plate change or plate sticker required as the windshield sticker validates registration.

Thanks, Mike. Looking good these days. I just need to know about the coffee meet-ups in advance. More often than not it seems I have a soccer-Dad conflict.

The first year of the multi year "sticker" plates was sadly 1977......so there's no specific 1977 plates for me to purchase, except Dealer tags...I had a vendor at the Autorama try to sell me some of those once insisting they would be approved, but I found that really hard to believe!!!

So I gave up on it...there's now a contractor you can actually order Texas plates from I don't know if they'd make me "1977" plates or not...
