With the Halo obscuring the Driver's helmet, car number clarity is important this year to distinguish team mates.

Red Bull fears bigger Mercedes engine advantage in 2018 F1 season

Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko fears Mercedes' engine advantage in Formula 1 could be even bigger this season.

Mercedes has won 63 grands prix and swept to four consecutive drivers' and constructors' championship doubles since F1 switched to turbocharged V6 hybrid engines for the 2014 season.

Red Bull has only won eight races in that time as engine supplier Renault has proven inferior to both Mercedes and Ferrari.

It has traditionally pushed the build of its car to the last minute to maximise design time, but brought forward its launch this year and has already completed a shakedown at Silverstone ahead of the first pre-season test next week.

Despite the extra push on the chassis side, Marko fears Red Bull's newly-launched RB14 may not be enough to challenge for the 2018 championship.

"The [Renault] engine should be more reliable and more powerful this year, and we will have a competitive chassis from the beginning, but Mercedes is building a new engine," Marko told Auto Motor und Sport.

"It might be that their advantage will then be even bigger.

"If the [Renault] engine lives up to the promises that have been made, we should definitely be closer to Mercedes.

"We saw that we always came up to speed in the second half of the season, and the analysis showed that we always finished the car too late.

"It doesn't make any sense if you find a couple of hundredths of a second in the last 14 days.

"It is more important to be well-prepared for the season."

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/134456/ricciardo-crashed-new-red-bull-on-filming-day

Red Bull says its plans for Formula 1 pre-season testing remain on course, despite Daniel Ricciardo slightly damaging its new RB14 in a filming day crash at Silverstone on Monday.

Ricciardo was giving the team's striking-looking 2018 design its first run at a wet Silverstone just hours after the first images of the car were released.

But the team had to cut short running before its 100km limit was reached because Ricciardo crashed out in the damp conditions, hitting the barriers at low speed.

Although the Australian escaped unharmed, sources suggest the impact was enough to damage the front of the car, including the suspension, nose, front wing and floor.

Liberty risks making F1 Mickey Mouse series says Willi Weber

Michael Schumacher's former manager is worried Liberty Media risks turning formula one into "a Mickey Mouse series".

Earlier this week, a rumour spread on the internet that Willi Weber, who was Schumacher's manager as he hit F1's dizzying heights, had died at the age of 75.

Kolner Express newspaper discovered that the rumour was false.

"Luckily I'm in good health even if I am still recovering from a back operation," he laughed.

Weber said he would like to know more about the health condition of Schumacher, the seven time world champion who suffered a serious skiing crash in 2013.

"Unfortunately I have not heard from Corinna," he said.

"Michael's accident is four years ago now and we all know it was not a broken leg."

Weber said he hopes to attend the opening of a Schumacher car collection in Cologne in April, and "Maybe then we will learn if he is feeling better".

As for the future of formula one itself, Weber admits he is worried.

"This ugly roll bar (Halo) ruins the cars," he said. "Safety is important, but that was a mistake by Jean Todt.

"That there are no more grid girls is also a sin," Weber added. "They provided the necessary glamour.

"The new owners have to be careful not to turn formula one into a Mickey Mouse series."

Energy drink eyes Force India takeover

Force India is in talks to be taken over.

British newspapers The Sun and the Daily Mail report that talks are taking place with a consortium led by British energy drink company Rich Energy.

The news comes as the Silverstone based team considers changing its name, and amid owner and boss Vijay Mallya's well-publicised legal troubles.

The reports say the takeover group is led by Rich Energy founder William Storey but also backed by "a wealthy consortium of business figures".

Rich Energy and Force India would not comment, but the Daily Mail cited sources that suggested the deal could be worth $280 million.

Not sure Renault is kicking them out, unless Renault believes they've got a title contending car for 2019....which is seriously unlikely. They'll be Aston powered by 2020/2021, whenever the new rules kick in.

Never heard of that company, ever. Looked it up. Tiny following.

Smells like a cheap marketing campaign. Slip it to some newspapers and when confronted say it's false rumour. Simples.

It's nothing new, been widely reported since mid-season 2017. After the McLaren-Renault announcement there was a race weekend team principals' interview in which Cyril was asked about rumors about Renault severing ties with RB. He said we wouldn't comment with as wry a smile as you'll ever see. Meanwhile Christian Horner looked like he was going to crap his pants. Renault has been waiting for the chance to stick it to RB for the abuse they've endured from RB group since 2014. Only way I see RB hanging onto their engine supply is if they agree to let Renault keep Sainz.. which depends on whether Ricciardo stays.

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/131789/renault-split-could-force-red-bull-to-honda

Red Bull may be forced into a switch to Honda engines for 2019, with current partner Renault working to end its supply deal at the end of next year.

A complicated engine merry-go-round is set to be concluded this week with McLaren and Toro Rosso swapping between Honda and Renault supplies respectively for next season.

Red Bull joining Toro Rosso with Honda power in 2019 was an obvious option as part of that deal, should the Japanese manufacturer show sufficient improvement next season, but it now appears that Red Bull may not have a choice.

Autosport understands Red Bull and Renault had agreed to extended its current deal to the end of 2020, although this was never formally announced.

However, the Red Bull-Renault alliance is now in the process of being cancelled by the French manufacturer as part of the fall-out of Toro Rosso's divorce from Renault.

Ferrari and Mercedes have no intention to extend supply deals beyond their current commitments, and were not interested in Red Bull supply for 2016 when previously offered the chance.

That would leave Red Bull with no option but to agree a Honda deal sooner rather than later.

A complete divorce between Red Bull and Renault after just one more season is no surprise given the public breakdown in the relationship in 2015 and subsequent rebadging of the engine as TAG Heuer.

Red Bull and Honda are already linked in MotoGP and, as with Toro Rosso, the deal is likely to considerable financial advantages as Red Bull will no longer be paying for its engines.

It is also likely to receive funding from Honda, which means that Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz's financial commitment will be substantially reduced.

Red Bull may also be able to keep its TAG Heuer sponsorship, although the watchmaker would not badge the engine.

However, there are obvious question marks over Honda's potential form in 2019, even allowing for some improvement over the course of next season.

If the Renault split is confirmed the news will be of considerable interest to Red Bull's drivers, with Daniel Ricciardo's contract expiring next season and Max Verstappen believed to have a performance-related clause to end his deal, which currently includes the 2019 season, early.

The likelihood is they will now accelerate the process of looking for alternative seats, with opportunities currently available at both Mercedes and Ferrari beyond 2018.

Longer-term, Red Bull remains linked to the potential arrival of Porsche in 2021, which could mean that its deal with Honda lasts for just two seasons.

Confirmation of the McLaren-Honda/Toro Rosso-Renault severances, and subsequent swaps including Carlos Sainz Jr switching from Toro Rosso to Renault, are expected on Friday in Singapore.

jeeeeeezzzzzzzuuuuuusssssss. The compromises these guys have to make with these hybrid PU's and 3 component engine rules. I guess we'll wait till the second set of engines.

Renault admits its first #F1 engines of 2018 have compromises to ensure reliability and will be same power level as late 2017 per Autosport.
