He seems very quick to end an auction rather than trying to get bids out of people.

    Hi Marcel,

Do you think the absence of a quality auctioneer (i.e. Max Girardo) had any impact on the results?

    TIA.

IMHO overall I suspect not as It doesn't make a difference if there are no genuine bids anyway. However I suspect they might have missed Max's ability to tease an extra €5 - €10k out of some bidders with a 'come on sir do you want to miss out on this gorgeous Dino for a mere €5,000 are you'.

Special cars with special documented history i.e. Race cars, or rare celebrities cars, or one offs etc will always command a premium. I was even surprised the C type brought such a result. As Gregor Fisken said, if you have to explain, you've got a problem...still markets likes originality with race cars,,not obvious combination.
The rest are commodities and will fluctuates as other commodities. We and other collectors should not be surprised from this.

Well, in Europe at least the nicest examples need not be advertised to sell. There is a lot of demand for these cars so that they do not need to come to market and easily sell through private treaty sales. Result: now what sells through public adverts or auctions are mainly the others (imperfect examples or fully restored unoriginal ones), and that push down the prices of the rare good examples that go for sale publicly.

Personally I was amazed by the so-poor condition of 95% of the cars offered by RM, Bonhams and Artcurial in Paris earlier this year. Almost all had issues, apart from the ultra-high net worth cars which are a specific market.

To talk about my very recent experience this month I received two private offers for two cars I own and which may be the best surviving examples in the world (namely a Lancia Flaminia GT and a Alfa Romeo Montreal). Not multimillion-dollar cars. Both offers were a multiple of 100k euros, which is way above prices you see on internet or at auctions. But I will not sell anyway as I just like these cars, that I bought when no one looked at them.

Speak to any dealer here and he will repeat that they can no longer find nice original cars, in the right color, etc. There will always be demand for perfection, but the rest including the "just good" could well take a hit. My humble guess !

    Cheers.
