McLaren to reuse engines at the Chinese GP. Alonso had an ERS cooling problem and Button had a turbo problem, but the engines were not damaged. Good for them, hope Honda sorts it out sooner than later. Have they changed the number of engines to 5 this year yet? McLaren to re-use Sepang engines in China | F1 news | Motorsport.com
can someone here explain to me, a pretty insightful motorsport enthusiast/participant myself, how Toro Rosso annihilated its parent team Red Bull so badly?
I think it has been agreed by the teams but not ratified by the FiA. Also, the FiA may impose conditions on the 5th engine like it can only be used for practice.
Australian GP mate, not this one obviously. And I've already done the maths. This year in P3 Vettel was 0.696 seconds slower than Toil, while last year Alonso in P3 was only 0.507 seconds slower than Toil. So at THAT GP the Ferraris performance compared to Mercedes went backwards if we compare Vettel against Alonso. Kimi though did go 0.12 faster ... So maybe Vettel is that little bit slower than Alonso? ... I don't know, but we cannot say at the Aussie GP Ferrari was closer to Mercedes IMO. But yes Gary's numbers are on the high side Pete
Ehhhh. Hard to say after two races. Plus that disregards chassis and setup, which is at least 50% of the game.
Not only that - they did it with two complete rookie drivers, one of whom is not even old enough to get a drivers license in many countries. Oh, how this makes me laugh! More than the McLaren Honda debacle...!
I keep hoping the FiA will do something smart, despite the mess they put F1 in. With Ferrari proving that if teams are actually allowed to improve their PU's gaps can be made up. It makes me wonder how much competition we might have had in 2014 if the legislated ban on "catching up" didn't exist. If they were smart, they'd immediately suspend all the regs that prevent any PU changes. Let it be open slather for 12 months for all the teams - something akin to when the V8 came in. In 12 months re-instate the current status quo.
The problem will remain the same as it happened over the winter - Mercedes will be allowed unlimited improvements just as would Honda, Renault, and Ferrari - so Mercedes would likely maintain their gap if not increase it (let's acknowledge that they're not slouches when it comes to engines, and it's unlikely that they've run out of ideas and would stay static). The winter improvements allowed via the token system is as viable an opportunity for Renault and Ferrari to catch up as would be an unlimited development period - it will still come down to Renault and Ferrari doing a better job with their tokens, or with unlimited development, than Mercedes can do.
So I'm a little confused with your post. Ferrari have the same tokens as everybody else and yet they have made improvements, so why do we need to change the regs? And also if the regs prevent PU changes, how did Ferrari improve their PU? The fact is there is no ban on catching up, Renault are just struggling with this concept. Pete
I think the lack of pace and reliability issues at Red Bull are the direct result of being the factory team. It seems like the upgrades being installed on the RB11 are hurting instead of helping, and Toro Rosso has these older but faster/more reliable variants of these parts and engine maps.
