Went to Daytona today for the Roar before the Rolex to see what one might expect for the upcoming Rolex 24 and after one day I'm thinking it is going to be crazy :D

First off I go to the ticket office to get my Rolex 24 ticket which also gets me into the ROAR. I got my super pass ticket but parking passes were sold out. Seems everything in the infield is sold out. They said interest was high because of the merger and they sold out the camping and parking soon after the tickets became available in July. I've always got mine when I go to the ROAR but this time I was a few months too late. :(

The weather today was brutal with low temps and a stiff wind that made it feel like it was in the high 30s but the action on the track made it worth it. There were so many cars you always had something to look at. It felt like an endless stream and they ran close. When they get to racing it is going to be wild.

I took some pictures and I tried to get some video which I'll edit and post after the weekend.

Great photos. Really! Keep it coming. Are the DPs quicker than the P2s?

    Awesome pics, thanks for sharing.

I really like the photo of Dario, both sad and inspiring at the same time...

YES, so far the DP's are considerably faster than the LMP2 cars. Remember Daytona is a horsepower track where aero downforce has little use. Its all about engine power and the DP's got a horsepower increase

I don't know which is fastest because I haven't looked at the timing but what caught my eye was the action on the track.
Some cars could drive much deeper into the turns, they were often 3 wide in the horseshoes and lots of give and take.

They are loud and really fun to watch. :D

I'm off to Daytona again and today they will have a night practice.

    Here's a few more.

I'll be there today/tonight-hope night practice stays dry.

yes the DP's were faster than the P2s by a big margin-over 1.5 seconds. not like we didn't see that coming, but still somehow disappointed that NASCAR isn't providing a properly level playing field.

Weather should be ok and you're going to have a great time.

I'll be in the garage before and after they go out and around the track during.

I'm the tallest guy with a camera wearing a white cap and shorts.

Stop me and say hi if we pass by :)

Thank you for those photos. Another year I won't be attending unfortunately missing those fresh new liveries. The Deltawing seems to have grown. The new Delta88 version ? ;)

Thanks for the photos and updates from the track. Good stuff. Care to share your camera settings for the panning shots? Mostly curious about shutter speed. Thanks!

OK, I'm officially excited about the TUSCCR season. still want to see less of a gap between DP and P2, but GTLM and GTD look like they'll be rockin'.

Glad everyone likes the pics :)

    I'm using a Canon 7D and a 70-200 f2.8 non IS lens hand held.

For the panning I set the shutter to 1/80 sec. This is the sweet spot for me. Anything faster and it begins to freeze the motion and anything slower my success rate really goes down.

For panning it is really important to follow through with your pan motion just like a golfer follows through with his swing. Keep it level and smooth following the subject and take the shot while continuing the motion. Best results are had when the subject is directly in front of you. It is very hard to freeze the subjet when it is coming towards or moving away from your position but shooting then can lead to some very interesting results.

Here's a few more from the weekend.

    great shots! :)

yeah, the RX8 was a cool car. I love the Mazda diesel prototype, but it needs more loud :D

although the Corvette DPs have pretty cool flames/noises now that they have proper paddle shift TCU/ECU electronics

I was standing half way between the dog leg and the little horseshoe doing the panning shots and the Delta Wing came around the dog leg, skittered just a tiny bit and when he tried to catch it he instantly went into a spin. More like a 180 as he went past me going backwards. Then it snapped around going in the right direction. He slid into another road that runs inside the horseshoe, stayed on it and actually accelerated around to come out onto the track at speed. All that and he probably never got under 40 MPH. It looked like something out of a video game

My camera was set for panning and on top of that I lost focus so I didn't get a good shot but it was amazing to watch.

Very clean panning! I also use a 7D, not sure if I'll make it down from Jax this year. Do you manually set the focus or let the 70-200 focus as you pan?
