Ferrari have just announced some changes that will be occurring to the California.
    *
From January 2012, the Ferrari California will offer new high performance features designed to further enhance its sportiness whilst retaining the high standards of in-car comfort typical of the model.
    *
Specifically, the 4.3 Litre GDI V8’s power output has been increased from 460 CV to 490 CV at 7,750 rpm and maximum torque from 485Nm to 505Nm at 5,000 rpm.
    *
This boosted performance thanks to a new optimised microcast exhaust manifolds, and new engine software specifically developed for RON 98 petrol. The California’s torque curve has also been modified and is now higher at all RPM.
    *
The experience on aluminium manufacturing and increasingly sophisticated building technologies, like the use of multiple aluminium alloys, allowed to reduce the overall weight of the car by 30kg.
    *
These interventions enhance the overall sporty feeling of the car, improve its dynamic behaviour, and more specifically, make for better pick-up from low to high revs.
    *
The car will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.85 seconds.
    *
In addition to these contents the car will be equipped with an upgraded version of the on board infotainment system. New main characteristics are as follow:
    *
-********* 40 Gb Hard Disk Drive (was 30Gb)
-********* 3D Freeway function: Detail views of junctions on maps
-********* IPhone 4 & Samsung Galaxy compatible Bluetooth
    -********* Touchscreen number dialling
-********* Audio Streaming via Bluetooth: can access music lists via Bluetooth
-********* Music played directly through USB (without having to save on HDD first)
-********* Integration of commands for new generation iPod / iphone
-********* AAC file Playing (Apple Audio Format)
    *
To reflect the changes to the California, there will be a slight increase to the basic price of the car. At this stage we do not know what the price increase will be but as I hope you can appreciate the above mentioned changes will increase the ownership experience and desirability of the California even more.
    *
In addition to the above, Ferrari have also announced today that from March 2012 deliveries, a new Handling Speciale package is being introduced for clients who like a sportier, more challenging driving experience without compromising comfort on board.
    *
The HS Package encompasses technical modifications to the running gear and set-up of the car which guarantee sportier handling, specifically:
    *
-********* reduced body roll which improved dynamic behaviour
    -********* less steering wheel activity and improved responsiveness to driver inputs;
-********* superior handling yet the car is as easy to control as ever
-********* a high compact feel without any excessive impingement on driving comfort
    *
    Evolved Magnetorhelogical Suspension System
    *
This is an evolution of the damping system available on the Ferrari California and debuted on the 599 GTB. With respect to the previous generation, the ECU, control software and dampers have all been evolved, improving the car’s dynamic behaviour because of the superior responsiveness of the various components.
    *
    New Springs
    *
    New Springs are 15% stiffer
    *
    New Steering Box
    *
A new steering box with a steering ratio that’s been reduced by 10%.* This makes for more direct steering with less steering wheel activity over mixed routes.
    *
The Handling Speciale Package will enhance both sportiness and driving pleasure, particularly on more exhilarating routes with plenty of bends, twists and tight turns.
    *
    Aesthetic Features
    *
For customers wishing to aesthetically differentiate their cars, while still maintaining the classic elegance typical of the California, a new grille featuring silver Nurburgring slats which also feature on the air intake on the bonnet and the side outlets will be introduced on request.
    *
This package as mentioned earlier will be available for March 2012 deliveries and will be a cost option. Again at this early stage we have not been informed of the cost.

So, does this mean that current Californias (produced before January 2012) will not work with the iPhone 4?

My father has an order for a California with an expected delivery date of December. Now I am wondering if he should try and push it back.

Mine works perfectly well (sort of) with the iPhone 4S so I am sure yours should as well.

Bluetooth has a tendency in the California to drop sometimes but I have had that issue with many different mobile phones

I wonder if the "Nurburgring" grill is the same as the Vintage grill?

They are referring to Bluetooth Audio streaming of music from your iPhone 4. Nor does plugging your phone into the the charging jack and playing music via the wires. You can plug in a regular iPod and play music that way though.

Like others said, the iPhone 4 works fine in regards to telephone functionality, but not music.

What I want to know is how does this effect resale values of current California's? Are people in the near future only wanting to purchase 2012 onward California's because of increase horsepower and better entertainment system, etc.? Should I offload my California now and put in that order for a 458 Spider, then after the next big change to the 458 is released sell again? So tiring.

You can't keep up. They are always updating the cars. Note the "slight price increase" comment. My bet, will be 3-5% (and that's in addition to the 2% increse for the current 2012 models being sold). I think that the "older" Cali's will remain on their current depreciation curve. BTW, just picked up a 2012 Cali, will post pics soon.

I had a feeling the info on the California upgrades would come any day now.

Nothing to special, a little less weight and power, a better multimedia system. Was hoping for 500 hp but 490 is plenty.

I do look forward to hearing more about the Handling Speciale package though.

Will it retain the same model name or will Ferrari change it to California M or something of that sort? My bet is it just stays California..

FYI, that is 93 Octane in the US.

98 RON Octane (as quoted in Europe) is equivalent to 93 Octane in the US

I wonder if Ferrari can put the HP enhancement as an option for pre-facelift Calis.... since it should just be an ECU thingy....

So, is this coming to the US?

My cali is scheduled for Jan (late) 2012 production. *********.com is reporting that it is for Euro models only. I am gonna be PO'd if this goes for EU and Asia only.

    Thanks!

Highly likely Pre-M or Pre-facelift model will depreciate a little bit more.

If your iPhone 4 works with the Bluetooth it is more by accident than design. FNA confirmed to me that the current system is not optimized for Bluetooth compatability with the iPhone 4. A software fix should be available before year end.

My dealer said the same thing. He said that 'if' a change was going to be made it would probably be for the 2013 model year.

Just informed from my dealer that official word from Ferrari NA is a no for the power and infotainment upgrades for US market. This confirms another source. No goodies for US consumers on 2012 orders.
