Hello and Happy New Year Proud owner of a new to me 2009 F430 Coupe, it is been 2 weeks my first Ferrari. I went on my second drive this afternoon about 20 minutes, she drove superbly. Came home parked in garage and I noticed this ticking sound see link below. Seems to be coming from front LHD drive car of the engine. Anyone familiar with what this is. Not sure if normal or a problem. Does not change in frequency or tone with engine revs, I don't believe it is the engine - oil level was checked and it is good. Does this sound like what a cracked header is? many thanks and do plan to introduce the car soon https://youtube.com/shorts/JAPPGohL1l4?feature=share
That doesn't sound OK to me, but it is really hard to be 100% sure without being there in person. Personally I wouldn't drive the car: for peace of mind book it in for a check over.
It doesn't sound right to me, something is off. My F430 doesn't have that sound. I'd have it checked out.
OP shouldn't forget that you need to have the engine up to temp and running to check the oil... overfilling is a bad thing with these cars... Here is an oldie but goodie on checking F430 fluids...
Congrats on your new purchase Alex! A new owner here too. Welcome to the club Yes, that sound is very concerning. Not sure where you are located at but I would highly recommend a post-purchase inspection as that is what I did. I would research your closet Indy shop so that you could perhaps end up taking your car there for servicing years down the road. That is what I did and got very lucky with very knowledgeable and nice guys. I am very new to this too and this forum rocks - my first and only go-to for questions. Hope it isn't anything major!
Thanks all, have been digging around listening to old Youtube videos and I am pretty sure it is a cracked exhaust manifold, which I was going to replace with fabspeed headers regardless coupled with and the upgraded exhaust mounts. Interestingly enough must have happened after purchase as I had the proper inspections done, and noticed it for the first time yesterday (I am pretty good about my pre-purchase reviews). @TommyTheV good luck with you new toy they are just amazing,... I will keep the forum posted as I go through the next steps, will take some time but will sort it out before the driving season starts up.
What is your assembly number? I know you're 2008, but curious if you have MKII or MK I manifolds. The assembly number is important to know when changes were done to the cars. Ferrari makes some changes mid-year.
26K No smoke inside engine bay at all... i have scanned with a flashlight for some time (as i watched plenty of smoke from the tail pipes). There is also no dust in the engine bay at all.. but i am seeing some weird white threads which could manifold insulation? Image Unavailable, Please Login
That piece with the white threads on it is the heat shield for the CV boot. Mine is all metal on my 2009. Wonder if someone put some type of fiberglass on top of it for some reason? Maybe for additional insulation? Anyone know? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
The alloy casings look very dirty and sooty by the manifold outlet to the cats- there is a donut shaped seal ring in that joint with the springs- these go hard and leak. Wrap some white kitchen paper around it when cold, then fire it up for a minute so it does not go on fire, see if you get a black line. It might even blow off if a decent leak. Get someone to watch as it fires up. Mine is an 08 with 15 k miles and casings are not sooty like yours
These motors do tend to have a lot of noises, but that tick sounds very much like an exhaust leak . I would start by having the headers inspected, possibly a loose bolt, also could be a crack in the headers. I ended up going with the OEM challenge headers on mine and an very pleased
Will be scheduling a visit to a shop in the next few weeks... keep you guys posted. Appreciate all the kind advice and opinions. Great team here.
I had Ferrari check it during service back in April they said was nothing just normal fuel injection ticking. I then developed the RPM dip at start up (very common lots of discussion on it), I treated the car with STP fuel injection cleaner. RPM dim went away and the ticking sound went away. 1 treatment was all I needed.
Well that’s a LITTLE bit of a relief… I watched your video and thought “oh uh, sounds like mine!” Every chat is a little different, from cracked headers to missing bolt, to fuel injectors. I’m going to do a smoke test tomorrow and see what I find… Going to use a literal dance party smoker. I will do the headers at some point regardless. But it would be nice to know if I’m driving the car any time soon or not. I know it’s in the video, but how dramatically loud on cold start versus warmed up? And exactly how long? Also.. Do you have stock headers? How old is the car? How many miles? Sorry if I missed that somewhere above… I’m in so many forms it would be nice to have your answers all in one answer… lol
